Feedback from Mrs. Jordan about online learning...
- Several students are not logging in for afternoon learning. Please check with your child after 12:55 each day to make sure they are working.
- Students have independent work to complete each afternoon on SeeSaw, Google Classroom or other apps. Please check in with your student occasionally to make sure they are completing all of their work. Some assignments will go in the gradebook.
- I check in with student computers in the afternoon on an app that allows me to see if the computer is on, in use, and what apps or meetings are open. I have noticed several student computers turned off all afternoon.
- Some students have meetings in the afternoon with other teachers. Please make sure your child is attending LIVE specials and scheduled meetings with support teachers.
What does a good home learning space look and sound like?
- Free from distractions like loud TV, video games, siblings, and music.
- Chair that helps your student sit up and see into the camera.
- No toys that can take attention away from learning or show up in the screen as a visitor.
- Headphones to minimize noise around the student if needed.
Just a reminder...
- We can hear shows playing on the TV.
- We can hear the students arguing or wrestling with siblings.
- We can see toys being played with during learning.
- I can hear lots of background noise in student recordings for classwork and independent work.
What's happening in 3rd grade?
We are getting ready to move into our first reading unit all about learning to be a reader with GRIT! The posters below show the strategies we will be focusing on. Students will practice their reading strategies each day during independent reading and respond to questions to show their thinking.
We will also begin our first writing unit at the same time as our first reading unit. Students will be focusing on crafting true stories in narrative form. This is our first year with Writing Units of Study. It works with our new reading curriculum we started last year called Reading Units of Study. Students will learn how to use a storyteller's voice when writing. They will study drafting, revising, and other how other authors write to help them become a more reflective writer.
We are focusing on responsive word study this year in 3rd grade. We focus each week on a few key words for our Word Wall, and then move into activities that help us use words we know to spell other words. We are also practicing identifying words using context clues, and using the theme of a passage help us figure out words when we are reading too! We are become Word Wizards!
Math - Students are halfway through Module 1 in our math book. We have been learning about the relationship between multiplication and division, as well as different ways to show how numbers are grouped with pictures, arrays, and number sentences. Students should continue to practice their number count by's at home whenever they can. We are learning that there are many different ways to figure out our multiplication facts, and count bys are very helpful!
Social Studies - 3rd graders have finished a unit about rules and responsibilities in our school and community. They did a great job discovering why we need to be safe. We are now working on discovering where we are located on earth, and why our location is so important to our survival. We will study oceans, continents, and natural resources during our investigations.
Cursive - Students have a cursive writing video and 2 pages to complete in their cursive writing book each Tuesday afternoon. Ask your child about "pencil pick ups"...if you notice their grip on the pencil is not correct, please help them to grip the pencil correctly (between the pointer finger and thumb, resting on the middle finger...a gentle grip.)
