FALL BREAK IS COMING! OCT 3RD - 14TH

Big picture

ORHS Fall Intersession is October 3rd to 6th

Operation Restoration (O.R.) and back this year…ACT Prep Bootcamp!

ORHS Fall Intersession is October 3rd through October 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:00 for those who wish to partake. Bus transportation will be provided as needed. Students need to bring their laptops and their school supplies each day. Fall Intersession is self-paced, so once the missing assignments are completed, students are allowed to stop attending. They do not have to attend all four days if they complete their work before the week is up. Please check Skyward, look for emails generated from ICU, or contact your child's teacher if you have questions about their missing work or whether they need to attend intersession. For Fall Intersession, students are expected to complete missing assignments to improve their grades. Students who are failing a class or classes are strongly encouraged to attend.

In addition to Operation Restoration (O.R.), this year we are offering an ACT Prep Bootcamp, just in time for the senior ACT retake on October 18th. Students will spend a day with each section of the ACT to practice test-taking strategies and review content. We strongly encourage our upperclassmen, especially seniors, to take advantage of this free opportunity to improve their ACT score.

OUR OAK RIDGE SCHOOL FEDERAL FUNDING DEPENDS ON YOU!

Impact Aid is a federal education program that reimburses school districts for the lost revenue and additional costs associated with the presence of nontaxable federal property. Most public-school districts are funded largely through local taxes and fees, and because federal land is exempt from taxation, districts containing federal property are at a financial disadvantage in funding their schools. We need your help in completing the Impact Aid online form to receive additional funding. We ask that every parent log into your parent portal account within Skyward and complete the form for each child in your household. The dates of completing the form are between Monday, September 19 and Friday, September 30. Thank you for your assistance.

IF you need assistance locating the parent Skyward login information, please contact Julie Brockwell at jbrockwell@ortn.edu, Chris Dunkle at cadunkle@ortn.edu, or Mrs. Thompson at sathompson@ortn.edu.

Congratulations to our own Jaylin Senk, who is one of 62,000 students from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs! These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them stand out during the admissions process. Jaylin earned this recognition by excelling on her PSAT/NMSQT and/or AP Exams. Congratulations Jaylin!

ASHLEY BLAKE TRAVELS TO THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND RETURNS 4TH IN THE WORLD

Rogain is a 24 hr orienteering race that requires at 2 person team. The US team, “Best Pace Scenario”, includes myself and my race partner, Nikolay Nachev (both of us Barkley Marathon veterans, and 2021 US Champions and 2021 North American Champions). The team with the most points wins, you acquire points by navigating to a checkpoint that is marked on the map using only a compass (phones and GPSs are prohibited). High value check points are going to be in hard places to get to, tops of mountains, bottom of valleys, on the other side of water sources or the far reaches of the boundaries. Check points of less points might be located in open grass fields, near trails, or in flat areas. You must return to start/finish before 24 hrs is up. Speed and precision are key skills. In the North American Championship 2021 we won by a landslide, beating all teams – in all age and gender categories. We are ranked 4th in the world from the 2022 World Championship (2021 was cancelled due to COVID) which was held in Czech Republic in the Peprsek mountains and spilled across the border into Poland. We are bound for 2023 World Championship which will be held in Lake Tahoe, California.

SENIOR, COMMANDING OFFICER, SASHA UMANSKY WINS A VERY RARE AWARD

Oak Ridge High School Navy Junior ROTC Cadet Commanding Officer Sasha Umansky was recognized as the Oak Ridge Student Athlete of the Week in a small ceremony at the high school. During the ceremony, Cadet Umansky was surprised and presented with the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement by Mr. James Drewery, Commander of American Legion Post 112 in Oliver Springs, TN.

Of the 470,000 JROTC cadets in all branches of service across the nation, less than 80 receive the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement. This equates to being in the top 0.02 percent of all Cadets across the country. The award is given annually to cadets who demonstrate exceptional achievement of scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects, leadership, and physical fitness. Cadet Umansky was recommended for this prestigious award by Commander Keith Klemm and Chief Ryan Nicholls for her superb leadership as the Wildcat Battalion Commanding Officer.

ATTENTION SENIORS - RSCC AND TSAC DAY - SEPTEMBER 20TH

Next Tuesday, September 20th, the Class of 2023 will be participating in TN Promise/Community College Day. This annual event is when members of the TN Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) and Roane State meet with our Seniors and help them apply for the TN Promise Scholarship and help them to apply to a community college. For some of our students, this will be their safety plan, but for others, this will solidify their post-secondary plans. For the last two years, half of our college bound students have made the choice to use their TN Promise and attend a community college. We are thankful that TSAC and RSCC set aside this day to come and meet with our students. Attendance will be taken and is mandatory. It will be the same schedule that we followed for Senior Seminars.

Seniors should report to the amphitheater on 9/20 using the following schedule:

First Block: Last Names Ajaz - Fouche

Second Block: Last Names Francis - Lowe

Fourth Block: Last Names Lucas – Sanders-Ball

Fifth Block: Last Names Sangrey - Zorn

Please submit your designs for the Class of 2023 Senior Shirt to Mrs. Ledden in Room CS347 by Thursday, September 22. You do not have to be a senior to submit designs for the shirt—open to all grade levels.

Be sure to incorporate ORHS, Seniors, and Class of 2023 into your drawings. Place your name and first period teacher’s name on the back of each design entry. Entries must be original work and if selected, will become the property of Oak Ridge High School. Below are the most recent updates from the CDC regarding COVID. Please review the flyer for full guidance from the TN Department of Health and CDC. Students do not have to isolate if family members are positive unless symptoms develop.

STUDENT ID BADGES ARE REQUIRED

Students are expected to keep their badges on and visible every day. Students who fail to have their badges on as required will be given a day of lunch detention. We are aware new students and many freshman have not received their badges and will be receiving them over the next couple of weeks. Returning students who lost their badges over the summer should purchase a new one for $10.00. Badges are necessary for:
  • Safety - Most importantly - to identify students who should be in the building
  • Entry into the building - it's a key card
  • Entering the Library
  • Printing at the various printers around the school
  • Signing into Operation Restoration
  • Coming to Counseling for an appointment

It is critical families complete the form below. If you have qualified for free or reduced meals in the past, a form MUST be completed or charges will accrue in the cafeteria.

While families may not plan to take advantage of free school meals, many families will qualify for services far beyond meals such as reduced ACT and AP test costs. This information is strictly confidential and can be sent to Julie Brockwell in the Main Office or directly to Dr. Larissa Henderson, Pupil Services.

MEDICATION FOR THE CLINIC

Parents, students are NOT allowed to carry medications on their person at school. All medications must be registered with our nurse, Lori Gupton. Registration requirements are in the form below.
