Fifth grade celebrates diversity
Fifth grade students have been working collaboratively on research projects. They are learning about different holidays around the world. Once completed, they will share their knowledge with their class in celebration of our diverse community!
Fifth grade students have been working diligently on their fictional narrative pieces. They had tons of fun writing about being stuck in a snow globe!
Santa Sensory Writing
The students in Mrs. Braun's class have been working on using their 5 senses in descriptive writing. For this assignment they were asked to come up with 3 things that they wanted Santa to fill their stocking with this year. First, they filled out a graphic organizer and used their lists of "sensory details" to help them plan their writing. Then they wrote their letters. Mrs. Braun then had a conference with each student to go over any revisions that needed to be made, and then the students typed their final copies. The students cut out their stocking and then glued the letter and cotton balls onto the stocking. The students had so much fun doing this. Mrs. Braun's class are all very excited for the holidays!

Holidays Around the World
First grade has been learning about the winter holidays and holidays around the world.
On Tuesday they had a fun and festive pajama day.
Holiday Themed Days
Second grade enjoyed a few holiday themed days:
- Grinch Day
- Snowman at Night Day
- Charlie Brown Day
- Polar Express Day
- Twas the Night Before Christmas Day
Each day was filled with fun. There were literacy centers that focused on the skill of comparing and contrasting between books to movies. There were also many crafts.
Below are some photos with students wearing their pajamas while enjoying the holiday spirit.
Puppy Adoption Day
The students in Ms. Risley's class recently had a Puppy Adoption Day!
The children picked out a puppy to take home and have as a reading buddy.
They each named their puppy, picked out a collar, and filled out a birth certificate.
They talked about: reading to their new reading buddies each day and looking after them; reading in fun places like in bed, a fort, or with a flashlight; and filling out the reading log that was sent home. They can write about fun adventures with their reading buddy during the winter break and rest of the year. Then, they can share the reading buddy adventures with the class.
VMES Donates to Jersey Shore Animal Shelter
Mrs. Baillie's annual animal shelter drive was a huge success. Her class made snowflake ornaments to decorate the tree and staff added pictures of their animals. Mrs. Baillie's class learned about the importance of donating to local shelters, the benefits of adoption, the responsibility of taking care of a pet, and what it means to volunteer. They also wrote letters to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter.
Students enjoyed looking at the tree while passing in the hall and commenting on the number of donations added each day!
Mrs. Baillie and her class send out a huge thank you to the students, families, and staff for their generous donations to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter.

50th Day of School
First Grade students in Mrs. Hernandez's class had a great time celebrating the 50th day of school. Students celebrated by dressing up as kids did in the 50's. They participated in many center activities related to the 50th day of school. Some of the activities were creating a root beer float, working with 50 Legos to create an original piece, hula hoop contest and sock hop. First Grade students are 50 days smarter and having fun while learning.

Tips to Support Young Readers at Home
Read with your child
seesaw read (take turns part by part)
echo read (parent reads, child re-reads mirroring the expression)
Choral read (reading together)
Read to your child
Use character voices and expression
Pause and predict what will happen next
Pause and ask questions (about events, characters, new understandings, wonderings)
Listen to your child read
If they make a mistake, ask…
Does that sound right?
Does that look right?
Does that make sense?
What strategy can you use to help?
If your child gets “stuck” on a word or asks for help
Give them a little time to think and solve
Prompt with a strategy, like..
Get your mouth ready for the beginning sound
Stretch the sounds
Look for little parts or words inside you know
If your child is “stuck” after trying the above tell them the unknown word
Have fun READING at home!
Entenmann's Little Bites® Pouch Recycling Program Update
VMES's most recent shipment earned the school $27
(It doesn't sound like much, but it all adds up and helps the school.)
Just by collecting and shipping empty Entenmann's Little Bites Pouches, VMES has earned $136.00 in total over the past two years.
Previous earnings have supported some efforts in VMES such as Courtyard Cleanup , Spring Planting and providing supplies to VMES students.
Entenmann’s “Little Bites” and “Minis” pouches can be melted into hard plastic and remolded into new recycled products rather than being dumped into the landfill and harming our animals/ environment. Also, VMES can earn 2 cents/ pouch with each shipment over 5 pounds.
Please save “Entenmann’s Little Bites” and “Clear Entenmann’s Minis” pouches and send them into school. Make sure the pouches are emptied out and dry before you send them to school in a sealed bag (Feel free to label the bag with the amount inside.) to the attention of Mrs. Monaghan.
