"Togetherness Tuesdays" at EMS

What - Our middle school has started a new activity with our students, where we share our gratitude with each other. So far after two weeks of this activity we have sent just over 400 notes composed by students sent to students or staff.

How- On Tuesdays during Life class students are asked to write, at least, one gratitude note to a fellow student or staff member. The purpose is to take the time to show each other how much we care, support and appreciate all that we do for one-another.

Why - It is our belief that showing gratitude for one another to help increase our culture of respect and kindness at EMS. The idea of gratitude notes fits seamlessly into our system of PBIS on the ideas of being safe, respectful, responsible and kind. These notes are a way for students to show their appreciation for one another in a structured setting and to take the time once a week to let each other know that we care about and appreciate each other. Expressing gratitude also builds resiliency.

Extension Classes on Wednesdays and Thurdays

This upcoming week, your student will attend their Extension class on Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 9:30am.

Your student's enrollment in an Extension class is based on their academic need. We want your student to improve academic skill and comprehension as well as extend their learning.

Please review the bell schedule below to review when your student is enrolled in Extension. And, email or call the school if you have any questions.

This Week's SecondStep Life Class Lessons

We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, students also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others.

Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research-based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.

EMS Virtual Fire Drill

Wednesday, Nov. 18th, 10:30am

This is an online event.

EMS will host a Virtual Fire Drill on Wednesday at 10:30am. We will use this webinar link to discuss our practices and procedures in the event of a Fire Drill.

This is also an opportunity for your student to talk with you (the parent and guardian) about house fire plans and procedures within your own home.

Excused Absences

Please remember to inform us of any excused absence if your student is unable to be present online for all or part of a school day, by calling 503-630-8516 or emailing

Regardless of their excused absence, your student will continue to be required to submit any work that was missed at the soonest possible opportunity.

We are flexible and here to support you, but we also need to ensure that your student is providing us with evidence of their progress to meet our essential learning standards.

Unexcused Absences

As we progress deeper into the school year, your student's attendance will begin to matter more and more. Let us support you ,and work with you, to help your student attend class. To be marked present, your student must do both of the following:

1.Participate meaningfully in class activities (Fully complete school work, speak up in Zoom sessions, ask questions of their teachers on Zoom and/or in Canvas and finish and submit responses to assignments and/or surveys)

2.Communicate with their teacher or another staff member for each period they attend by responding to their teacher's prompts, sending a private message via Canvas or email about the task or assignment if they are not participating live. This communication is not simply saying, "I'm here." It must show a greater level of engagement to count toward being present that day.

If your student has difficulty accessing videos, Zoom meetings or assignments, please have them email their teacher as soon as possible to receive suggestions for how to resolve the issue, so they can be marked present for that class.

See Teacher contact information below.
