Fun Facts

  • THANK YOU to the parents who chaperoned the Earth Day field trip! That trip would not be possible without you!
  • THANK YOU for coming to the open house. It was wonderful to see you supporting our school, and even better to see how excited the students were to show you their hard work. Please see pictures of our work below.
  • Students are still able to participate on Night Zookeeper by doing the star writing free weekly mission. Our class has written a total of 5,000 words! I'm so impressed! I sent home a paper copy of the student writing before our trial expired. If you would like a digital copy, please let me know, and I can email it to you.
  • This month, 1st grade will begin participating in an ABC end of the year countdown. It will be a fun way for students to count down the last 26 days of school! Please look for a paper to come home this month.
  • Do you feel like you've missed something from a previous newsletter? I have all of the newsletters on my eBoard.

This month we finished Fundations Unit 9, and soon we will finish Unit 10. In Unit 9, students learned to read and spell words with suffixes. They also learned about closed syllable words and R-controlled vowels (bossy R's). In unit 10, students learned about vowel teams, and we practiced spelling closed syllable words with 5 sounds. These words could have 3 letter blends, digraph blends, and suffixes. Students are excelling when they are dictated a word to spell! We are now trying to carry over this knowledge to sentence writing.

Math Workshop

The mathematicians in our class completed Unit 7 on Geometry. They enjoyed exploring shapes and their attributes by using pattern blocks and pattern block templates. They sorted according to attributes, made attribute trains, and played the game "Make My Design". In this game, one student made the design and then used the correct describing words to tell their partner to make the same design. There was no peeking! This helped students become more familiar with shapes! We have now moved on to Unit 8 on mental math, money, and fractions. You will receive a unique login code for Splash Math. This is a fun way for students to go on missions while practicing math skills! It can be used for personalized instruction, practice, or enrichment. The interactive game motivates students to improve their scores! This can also be downloaded as a FREE app!!

Writer's Workshop

Writers have completed the unit on opinion writing. The last piece was a book review on their favorite book! After students completed the writing component, they created a book cover and recorded their writing. Instead of each student sharing in front of the class, the students recorded their writing into SeeSaw and created QR codes. The QR codes were placed inside the hand made book cover and displayed in our classroom library. Please see a picture of our favorite books below!

Science and Social Studies

Our scientists are exploring solids and liquids. They have conducted investigations to sort solids by characteristics, determine which solids roll, and which solids sink or float. In social studies, students have been exploring maps. Thank you for helping students to complete the Flat Stanley project! It was really fun to see where our Flat Stanleys traveled. We read all about the places, and then we also dropped pins on google maps. Please see the photo below of all the places our Flat Stanleys have been!
