CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
August 30, 2019
From the Assistant Director
We had a very busy and exciting week here at CDS! We are getting into a groove with the new schedule, students are getting settled into their classes, and sports seasons have kicked off!
Tuesday we opened the school doors to our parents for our annual Back To School Night event. Parents were welcomed at Dalton Hall and then proceeded to walk from class to class as their students do every day. It was a great community-building opportunity; thank you to everyone who was able to join us! One of major focuses this year is on improving parent and school communications. This event was just one step in that process. Building a brand new, easy-to-navigate high school webpage is another.
The next opportunity for parents to come and meet our faculty will be during our Parent Teacher Conferences on October 22nd and 23rd from 4 to 6pm each day. We will also start having Parent Teacher Forums to discuss issues facing our community in late September. We hope you can join us for both! Your voice is certainly valued.
This week we held our first annual club fair called Tastes of CDS. 65 prospective clubs participated by advertising, providing entertainment, recruiting members and even fundraising for our service-related organizations. It was a very successful event that really showed the diverse passions our students wish to share with our community. Juno Robertson and Yongseung Lee provided some excellent music from our stage, which helped build a festive atmosphere. Bliss, our school's dance group, also captured our school's attention with yet another great display of talent. Following the event, all students determined how they would spend their student organization by filling out a form and had their first student organization meetings on Friday!
This week our boys and girls volleyball teams headed to Kent (KKFS) for their first matchup of the season. I spoke with "Mean" Jean (Yejin) Shin and Ashly (Juri) Shimada the morning following the game and both were beaming with smiles. I am very proud of all our student athletes! Thank you for representing us in the first season and keep up the effort and hold your head high! #cdsphoenixrising
Next week we will be holding student council elections. This Friday in house candidates were interviewed and played some campaign advertisements. We have some really fantastic candidates running for office this year, and I'm confident that no matter how the vote goes that the student body will be in good hands.
Another major event happening next week will be our senior project pitch event on September 6th! All seniors must complete a project before graduation which shows that they embody our graduate profile and emulate our six school-wide values. Ms. Maguire is working hard to ensure that all of our seniors get their projects off to a great start. During our second annual pitch event students will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to members of our faculty and staff, get important feedback, and perhaps some direction for their projects. Following lunch on Friday 9th, 10th and 11th grade students may be dismissed or complete work in one of our quiet study areas before the busses leave at 2:50pm as usual.
It is a true blessing to be working with such passionate staff and students. Our community is off to a great start this year!
All the best,
Jason Musselman

Updates & General Information
Got Books?!
The CDS Library plans to have a book swap on September 25th! At this event our middle school students will get an opportunity to trade personal books for something new. We are hoping that there are high school students (or parents) our there who have books they loved reading when they were in middle school which they don't need any more.
The only requirements for books are that they should be geared towards 5-8 grade reading/interest level and should be in nice shape (gently used is perfect!).
Help a middle school student find a book they will love! Bring your books to the library any time before the swap!
Also, you may want to mark your calendars for the CDS book fair. The CDS Fall Book Fair has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, November 7 & 8, 2019! Hope to see you there!
Collective Uniform Order - 9/2 to 9/15

Upcoming Events
First Program Soccer Volunteering Opportunity
Coming up on September 21st, Dalton's First Program will be hosting a soccer event for students in Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade on September 21st. We are expecting quite a few other schools to participate, so we are reaching out to the High School community for support. We are always in need of enthusiastic volunteers to help events such as this run smoothly.
If you are interested, the day will begin at 9:00 am and finish no later than 2:00 pm. You can choose from a variety of positions, depending on your strengths and interests:
- Concession stand
- Reffing
- Face painting
- General help
Students who help out will also be provided with lunch and credit for 5 volunteer hours.
If you are interested, please contact Mr. Tronsgard (ctronsgard@daltonschool.kr)
Dalton High Schoolers are great mentors and role models for our first program students so we hope our students take advantage of this opportunity!
September College Visits
This year we have doubled the size of our college counseling department to ensure that our graduates are launched properly to the next stage of their lives. We would like to let our community know that there will be some college visits in September.
September 4th @ 1:30pm - Les Roches
September 26th @10:00am - Keio University
If you are interested or would like more information, please e-mail our assistant Sojin Han (sjhan@daltonschool.kr) or visit the college counseling office.
Keep an eye on the newsletter and the college counseling webpage as visits from the following colleges may be confirmed shortly:
