Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 2/20 - 2/24
Busy Week in Second Grade!
Fundations:
We are working on Unit 10 and the syllable type called the "D" syllable because it contains a double vowel combination: two vowels next to one another such as "ay" in the word play. The other vowel team in Unit 10 is "ai". We also did some work with homophones (ex. plain-plane) and created silly sentences.
Literacy:
This week we have been discussing famous African-Americans in history. The students were riveted by the true story of Henry "Box" Brown told in the book titled Henry's Freedom Box. He was one of the Underground Railroad's most famous runaway slaves with an ingenious idea of how to get to the North and gain his freedom. Please ask your student to tell you about it.
We also read another inspiring story in our Scholastic News of children doing a sit-in and changing the laws in Oklahoma. We learned that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and to never give up!
We then created our own Black Heritage Stamp Portraits from famous Black Leaders that have stamps commemorating their lives! Don't miss it, it's hanging above our lockers. Each student was given their own famous African American and drew them to the best of their ability. They are so beautifully done!
Math:
We finished up Unit 3 in math and took our assessment. I'll be sharing that with you at conferences. We've been working really hard at Reflex Math and Ten Marks. Just a reminder to visit Greg Tang's website from home too because it really challenges the students! It's free...www.gregtangmath.com
We did a really fun Valentine Math Activity measuring how big our hug is! We had to use tape measures! Then, we measured our wingspan vs. our height! Hope you liked the product of this activity...our BIG HUGS wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day!
Writing Workshop:
This week we did some writing about the presidents! We wrote about what it would be like if we were the president in honor of President's Day! Check it out on our lockers! We learned about Abe Lincoln and George Washington and compared and contrasted the two presidents after reading about both of them!
Cogat Practice:
We practiced for our CogAt Test this week. All 2nd graders will be taking the CogAt Test next week. This test will be read to them and assesses verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative abilities in children. Please be sure to have them get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast!
