A Letter from the President

Notes from the President

January 5, 2021

Happy New Year!

Christmas and New Year came, even if differently from years past. We had a delightful

Christmas party organized by Dorene Beck and Thayne Rooney. Thanks to both of

them! It seems like all of my celebrations except for immediate family were via zoom. I

am both learning how to use it better and missing the real face-to-face contact.

One item of good news is that vaccines have been approved and are being

administered. About half of the board has received their first dose. We are beginning to

hope that this will allow us to resume in-person activities, hopefully in the summer.

Plans for the quilt show are underway for August 19-21. This means that we need to fill

out committee chairs related to the show – two representatives, a volunteer coordinator,

a booth coordinator, and another that I can’t come up with at the moment.

We have made progress in getting people to complete their membership forms and

send in their dues. Within the next week, the mailing list and members-only Facebook

page will be scrubbed to reflect active members.

The January meeting will have member presentations. I need to get busy and finish

mine up. We will also have Show and tell, so either email pictures of your projects as a

response to the newsletter or post them on our Facebook page.

Speaking of Facebook, if you are on Facebook, please join our members group -- Fort

Worth Quilt Guild Members Group. If you have problems joining, send me a Facebook

message at Sarah Thomas Tutt. This is a good place to share our work in progress,

finished projects and words about what we are doing now.

We are still adapting to the reality of our current situation – some days with better grace

than others, Be safe. Wear your mask. Make a mask for someone else. Seriously

consider getting vaccinated.

Sew on – it’s good for the soul!

Old Business:

There was no old business.

New Business

Dorene Beck announced an upcoming challenge quilt contest for Guild members. It must be a spring quilt with a flower element. There will be two size categories, mini (9”-24”) or larger (over 24”). Watch the website and Ft Worth Quilt Guild Members page for details.

There are 40 members present on the Zoom meeting tonight.

  • January program will be Guild Round Robin Knowledge Share with a Saturday Zoom workshop- Jelly Roll Race with Prize Basket for the winner.

Zoom Christmas Party

The party started at 7:15 with Thayne Rooney instructing everyone how to make a Friendship star ornament with the supplies included in their package.

Next, Molly Risewick read a really cute Christmas poem. It seems Santa has seen her sewing room and thinks she already has enough crap.

Members were encouraged to make a cup of cocoa or spiced cider with the packets provided in the package. Some were already enjoying an adult beverage or two!

We played a game of “find the item”, and then Dorene showed everyone how to make a flannel strip tree ornament using the supplies in our gift package.

Show and Tell

Molly Risewick did a slide show of the quilts and projects that members posted on the Fort Worth Quilt Guild Members Group.

Sue Hildgardner made a pink heart quilt for a friend who likes pink.

Dorene Beck made a Christmas tree table runner, bowl cozy, and three jelly roll quilts for three of her grandchildren.

Beverly Peterson made a Four Star General quilt.

Sarah Tutt showed the blue and yellow quilt she made for her granddaughter Ava.

Gillian Coleman posted pictures of pillows she made for a friend out of her husband’s overalls.

Barn quilts made by members and posted on the site:

Deborah Warren, Judy Turner, Nanda Hall, Sarah Tutt, Diane Arthur, Cecilia Buckholz, Gillian Coleman, Molly Risewick and Dorene Beck.

Have you paid your Guild Dues? Though we are not meeting in person, we still have some outstanding programs being presented via ZOOM, as well as workshops. Presenters still charge a fee. They too are working from home! Our dues, along with fundraisers, help cover the cost of programs. Many of you have already completed the online registration form. Many have either paid me cash in person, mailed a check, or opted for Paypal. The problem right now is that many who have paid me have not completed the online registration. If you have not already done so, please do. An accurate roster will be generated from the information submitted by each member.

We finally have 2020 in our rear view mirror and 2021 awaits with all its challenges.
The holiday decorations are put away, so it is time to complete the UFOs that were not completed in 2020 or we can begin that project we have had our wanted to make.

Secret Quilt Buddies has been put on Hold for now

The raffle quilt winning ticket was drawn during our November Zoom meeting. The winner was Beverly Peterson, who came to pick up her quilt the very next day. Enjoy your beautiful quilt, Beverly!

In spite of the difficulties caused by the pandemic, we managed to make a profit of around $750 thanks to all the members who bought and/or sold tickets. Thanks to Chris Tomich who pieced the quilt, to Lynda McGee and Shelley Clauss who quilted it, and to Melissa Picha (The Compass Centre) who helped choose the fabrics and gave us a great guild discount.

Quilt Retreat will be held at The Compass Center, April 22-25th. There are still about fifteen openings. The cost is $295 for 3 nights or $196 for 2 nights. Grace Stroud will be teaching a couple of projects.

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, teacher, and friend. We lost her way too early. The fund was set up to help those in need to be able to enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops. We should be able to send 2 people to retreat this year. Application forms will be available at the November and December meetings or by sending an email request to Karen Holder. Applications should be in no later than the end of January. The applications may be given to a member of the board or to Grace Stroud.

Information from JPS for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Quilts

We received a letter recently introducing us to Mitzi Vanderark, the new coordinator of volunteers at JPS. They love the quilts we send them. They included some criteria for us to follow.

For the baby blankets:

Receiving – 36” x 36”

Preemie – 18” x 18” (NO flannel)

Baby – 36” x 36”, or 36”-38” by 40”-42”

No larger than 38” x 42” but preferred size is 36” x 36”

Fleece and flannel are NOT accepted in the ICU, 100% cotton only for front and back.

All quilts should be washed after piecing and before donation to JPS.

NICU Quilts

I'm again collecting NICU quilts for JPS. They should be about 36x36 of cotton, no flannel or fleece. I don't have a definite date to bring them there - probably aiming for early December. I live by TCU if you would like to drop them off, or I can try and pick them up. (My time is limited at the moment because my father is in the hospital and my mother in memory care wondering why he's left her. He is expected to recover and return by late November.) I know JPS is thrilled with our donations. Thanks. Julie Hedden 817 797 6109

A big thanks to all who donate fabric and time for the lovies. These are greatly needed and appreciated by the NICU at Harris downtown and the parents of the premies.

It helps to give the scent of the mothers to the babies and the scent of the babies to the mothers. We still need some cotton fabrics that read solid in red, green, blue and yellow.

Thank you,

Beverly Peterson
