Integrated Unit - Family Study
The Maples are continuing their exploration of families this week. This time we focused on family activities and special experiences. We also continued our work on family houses in our unit block area and some students made family paper dolls to be used in dramatic play. Students also began to look at their work and to think about what to include for the Family Expo.
Math Workshop
In math workshop we continued to use The Sleepover story and the rekenrek tools. Students composed (brought together) and decomposed (took apart) numbers in a variety of ways. Students also made their own bunk bed math stories. The Maples really enjoyed the process of creating, many students asked to do more than one bunkbed story!
If you want to make your own rekenrek check out this DIY page.
Reading Workshop
Guided reading groups are moving along. Each day several Maple groups meet with Sara, Campbell and Sivanne for at least 15 minutes to work on a particular skill. Some of the things that we worked on this week included:
- Using sound power to hear the letters in a word
- Rereading to check if what you read made sense
- Noticing patterns in a text
Writing-Workshop
In Writing Workshop we continued our strategy of asking Who, What, Why questions in our writing. We applied these ideas to writing about our families and the things that we hold special about them. Maples also began to expand their writing, using paper that had more lines and some that were only lines and no pictures.
Field Trip to The Way Back Home
On Thursday the Maples braved the subway and had their first Field Trip to New Victory Theater. They saw an amazing wordless puppet play called "The Way Back Home". The students made a number of noticing and predictions about the performance and some continued the story in their own drawings when we got back to Compass.
