The Truth About Grades
As a parent myself, I struggle with what grades mean. I want you to remember the same things I tell myself as I review my child's report card:
- Grades don't define character!
- This is one moment in time, regardless of the grade, this tells me where my child is performing - whether in understanding or sometimes effort - right now.
- My child is expected to master these skills and standards at the end of the year. The first quarter might not show an ideal level of mastery, but there is still time to learn.
Seek first to understand the child's perspective about their grades along with their feelings about school, then reach out to the teacher if you have specific questions. Teachers assess in many ways throughout the nine weeks and can provide insight into each grade in the gradebook. They are your partners and are committed to helping all students belong, learn, and grow.
