Recommended Fort Saskatchewan Reconfiguration
Recommended Solution and Implementation:
Board of Trustee Public Meeting: Wednesday June 14th 2:30pm
Administration acknowledges that the community is currently used to not having boundaries and that boundaries will result in the redistribution of SJXXIII students between two schools, potentially separating students from existing relationships.
However, any combination of SJXXIII and OLA serving all K-6 students is not sustainable based on the expected enrolment in the community. Both schools currently lack the core infrastructure for the number of classrooms they have and should be right sized. Both of these sites also face significant infrastructure issues that prevent expansion. This contrasts with SJP2 and SABCHS, which have both the core capacity and space to effectively expand with modular classrooms.
Administration is recommending that Option 2 (TWO K-4, 5-8, 9-12) is utilized for the Fort Saskatchewan community.
Boundaries
The following boundaries place students closest to their resident school, limit highway crossings for students and evenly distribute future population between K-4 schools.
SJ23 (K-4): Lands between the river and Hwy 21, up to Hwy 15 west (Fort Sask Central and West)
OLA (K-4): All other Fort Sask Urban and rural lands
SJP2 (5-8): All urban and rural Fort Sask lands
SABCHS (9-12): All urban and rural Fort Sask lands
School Configuration
Up to 5 modulars will be able to be moved from SJ23 and OLA to SJP2 to support middle years’ enrolments.
Transportation
St. André Bessette will be utilized as a transfer station for Southfort students
Programming
SJP2 will be developing a middle school program to take full advantage of the amenities of the school. Students will be provided with a variety of options in Career Technology Foundations, sports and fine arts. SJP2 will be able to accommodate every day gym for all students in Physical Education.
Staffing
Staffing will follow the Division’s current HR facilitated staffing process. During the budgeting process, schools will assess their requirements to best support students and staff will be placed based the needs of the school.
Outdoor Amenities
EICS has engaged with the baseball association and the municipality to develop a plan to move the ball diamond further into the field to ensure play space is close to the schools. As a middle school, reduced parking requirements will also allow the eastern portion of the parking lot to be repurposed as a hard play area.
Further concerns will be addressed at public meeting dates in the new school year as we begin the process of transition (ie: if exemptions will be considered for extraordinary circumstances).
