The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
October 12, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Parent-Teacher Conferences are upon us in the coming weeks and bring a time for teachers and parents to engage in conversations around setting up students for success academically, socially, and emotionally. As we prepare of our fall conferences, which typically center around goal setting, I find an opportunity to remind us of the power of yet as it relates to a growth vs. a fixed mindset.
As adults, the way we talk about ability and learning has a powerful effect on children's beliefs. Teachers and parents can develop and model a growth mindset in themselves to demonstrate and develop positive self talk and a growth mindset in students.
Below are some tips on ways parents can encourage a growth mindset in their children. Developing a growth mindset takes intentionality and time.
- Recognize your own mindset: Be mindful of your own thinking and of the messages you send with your words and actions.
- Praise the process: Praising kids for being smart suggests that innate talent is the reason for success, while focusing on the process helps them see how their effort leads to success.
- Model learning from failure: When we, as adults, talk positively about making mistakes, kids start to think of mistakes as a natural part of the learning process.
Below is a graphic of 10 growth mindset statements to assist in changing our words, mindset and the power of yet! Thank your for your continual partnership in the best interest of all students at Cedar Mill.
On a separate note, our security upgrades were activated yesterday. The installation of the card reader system allows for increased security of the building. Thank you for continuing to bear with us as we learn to work within the new system.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain, Principal

Educating & Supporting the Whole Child
by: Jan Blakeslee (Counselor) & Susan Hargrave (Success Coach)
At our most recent school gathering, we talked about the importance of FOCUS as it relates to learning and task completion. Using the Whole Child mindset, we will be focusing on feelings and zones of regulation as a tool for children to identify their feelings and where they fit in the Zones. Students also viewed a clip from the movie Inside/Out that dovetails perfectly with our message that strong emotions are okay but we need to learn how to appropriately process those emotions so that we can move forward and focus on our goals.
We will be working with students in class, at recess, and during lunchtime to identify how they are reacting to situations and being aware of their feelings and how to best manage both positive and challenging situations.
We hope you will also find the Zones chart useful in your conversations with your child about school and our goal of Focus.
“When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it’s our job to share our calm, not to join their chaos.” L.R. Knost
As always, we are open to your comments and questions. Have a great weekend!
Oregon Battle of the Books!
Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is kicking off for the school year and you will see flyers in your students' backpacks today. We are looking forward to another fantastic year of reading and appreciative the awesome support you've given OBOB in the past by reading books from the list in class, promoting the program among students, coaching teams and volunteering at our final battle!
Please mark your calendars for our final battle on Monday, February 25 right after school. It's a fun and exciting afternoon and if you're able, we could really use your help to act as moderators! For the now, we wanted you to be aware of the following:
Students are asked to form teams that consist of 4 students and an adult volunteer to act as their coach. Students choose their own teams. This is a difficult process. Most conversations with forming teams will happen at school. Please encourage students to find teammates who have similar expectations about how much each team member will read and how often they will meet. If you are aware of any student who really can not find a team, please have them submit a registration form and we will try to find teammates for them.
The Battle is on! The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is an exciting tournament of reading. Students in 3rd - 5th grade will form teams, read books from the OBOB reading list and then compete against peers by answering questions about what they have read at the final battles in February. Teams must complete a registration form and turn it into the library by Monday, November 5. Students and adults are invited to come find out what OBOB is all about at an informational meeting on Monday, October 29 at 6:30 pm Cedar Mill Elementary. Read on!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions!
Gratefully,
OBOB Coordinators

CogAT Screener Coming this Month
In October, all 3rd and 5th grade students in the Beaverton School District will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This 30-minute test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies and figure matrices.
Currently the main purpose for administering the CogAT is to identify students for TAG in the area of intellectual ability. Students who score at the 97th percentile or above on the CogAT screener will be invited to test with the full version of the CogAT that is used for potential TAG identification. The full version of the CogAT will be given in November. For more information, please contact Sally Weber.
