On Wednesday our Akron Ram unified basketball team took on the Northeast Coyotes at home. The players had a great time out on the court and Akron students enjoyed cheering them on.

Regional Spelling Bee

Eight District Spelling Bee qualifiers competed in the Regional Spelling Bee held at Haxtun on Wednesday. Ten schools from surrounding areas attended with 71 students participating. A total of 24 made it to the oral round. Three of Akron’s spellers made it: Izzy Hill, Dallas Palmer and Brigid Ardrey. Izzy and Brigid made it to the 4th round. Dallas Palmer placed 3rd overall and qualified for the State Spelling Bee to be held in March.
Big picture

Encourage

Encourage others today! So often the difference between success and failure is belief. Today, decide to be that person who instills a positive belief in someone who needs to hear your encouraging words. Uplift someone who is feeling down. Fuel your team with your positive energy. Rally others to focus on what is possible rather than what seems impossible. Share encouragement. It will help build your relationships. It matters and we all need it.

Counselor's Corner

Throughout the past couple of years we have seen mental health issues rise with children and teens. Parents are the first line of defense and can help mitigate issues by initiating important conversations with their kids to uncover difficult feelings. Removing distractions, asking direct questions and being a good listener can help set the stage for a supportive and productive conversation. Don't be afraid to ask direct questions, such as "Are you feeling depressed?" or "Are you thinking about hurting yourself." Validating your child's feelings can help your child feel supported and understood. If parents need to pursue professional help for their children, they can start by consulting their family doctor. Your school counselors are also a resource and are here to help.

Be a Builder!

I watched them tearing a building down,
A gang of men in a busy town.
With a ho-heave-ho and lusty yell,
They swung a beam and a sidewall fell.

I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled,
As the men you’d hire if you had to build?”
He gave me a laugh and said, “No indeed!
Just common labor is all I need.”

“I can easily wreck in a day or two
What builders have taken a year to do.”
And I thought to myself as I went my way,
Which of these two roles have I tried to play?

Am I a builder who works with care,
Measuring life by the rule and square?
Or am I a wrecker who walks the town,
Content with the labor of tearing down?
