Info about American Prisons

America has nearly 700 people in jail for every 100, 000 Americans. The next highest jail rate is Russia which has 474 people in jail for every 100, 000 citizens.

Two out of every three prisoners who are released from jail will be rearrested within 3 years. While profit for prisons has grown by 80 percent, the number of prisoners has only grown by 18 percent. Some of this money could be going somewhere else to prevent people from returning to jail.

Drug offenders make up half of the inmates in prisons. Although drug offenses are bad, murders and other violent offenses are worse. If there is a reduction in sentence times of drug offenders, then there will be more money available
