February Character Traits
Caring
IB defines caring as:
We show empathy, compassion and respect.
We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
Book of the Month
Compassion in Action
Compassion means showing empathy for other people and considering how they feel.
Participate in our "Caring and Compassion Challenge"
Throughout the month of February, all students in Framingham Public Schools will be learning about the FPS character trait of the month: Compassion. At our IB World School, we are also learning about the IB Learner Profile attribute: Caring. We believe in caring for each other and for the world!
We encourage all students, families, and staff to participate in our school-wide "Caring and Compassion Challenge" during the month of February! Let's all reflect on how we can take action in small and big ways each day to spread kindness, to show others that we care for them, and to help the world. It is so important now more than ever to be caring and compassionate!
In all K-5 classes during the first week of February, students will listen to stories and discuss examples of how we can take action to be caring and compassionate. You can watch and discuss these videos and examples on this slideshow with your children too.
Let's recognize and celebrate when we notice acts of caring and compassion by posting photos and examples on this school-wide Padlet website throughout the month of February. You can share examples of how YOU were caring OR you can thank someone for being caring to you! To post on the website, scroll left to right with the scroll bar on the bottom and click on the + sign under your child's grade level to start a new post where you can type and attach a photograph if you want! If you need help with posting an example, you can send your child's teacher a message or email Ms Resnick at kresnick@framingham.k12.ma.us
You can also post a caring video on this school-wide Flipgrid website!
We look forward to celebrating all the ways that our school community is caring and compassionate!
Students research new names for our school
Last month during Library and Portuguese classes, all K-5 students learned that our school will be changing our name because we do not support President Woodrow Wilson’s racist beliefs and we want a new name that supports our school’s values of social justice. Last week, students in grades 3-5 began brainstorming ideas for possible new names for our school and you can see some of their ideas in the image above! This week they will continue to brainstorm and research their ideas to justify why their idea would be the best name for our school. As they research ideas, they will reflect on how it supports the criteria for a new name for our school.
Criteria to consider for the new name for our school:
Our school’s name SHOULD:
Represent our beliefs and values as an IB World School
Support Social Justice
Our school’s name CAN:
Be named after an important person, place, historical event, organization, or idea
Be a name connected to our city, state, country, or the world
Our school’s name WON’T:
Be named after anyone who works at our school or in Framingham
Be named after anyone who is racist or who treats people unfairly
Students are encouraged to talk to their families about ideas for a new name for our school and to explore various online resources for inspiration while brainstorming and researching ideas. Some websites that may be helpful to explore include the Framingham Historical Center’s biography website with famous people from Framingham, this website of Social Justice activist biographies, biographies on the Epic website, and biographies in Portuguese on the Britannica Escola database. Although many students may choose to research famous people to inspire a new name for our school, we will also consider names that could be related to our location, historical events, organizations, or ideas.
In March, students in grades K-2 will also participate in an activity connected to the renaming of our school during Library class. They will be creating 3-D models of our school to decorate with pictures and words in Portuguese and English that describe our school community, including their ideas for a new school name. Please begin collecting any cereal boxes, shoe boxes, or tissue boxes that students in grades K-2 can use for this project.
This renaming process will take many months to include the perspectives of the whole school community and Framingham community before the Framingham School Committee makes the final decision. Click here to read our previous weekly updates about this renaming process. Thank you for your support and please reach out to the school if you have any questions.
