Celebrate Kindness

As we enter the month of March, our students and staff will be focusing on celebrating kindness. It's important our students understand the value of a kind gesture. Students in both buildings will be engaged in kindness activities in their classes. Did you know that being kind is good for you? Check out the video below covering the research behind kindness! Our goal is to teach empathy and make kindness a norm in our students' lives. Like the video mentions, it all starts with one.

The JR/SR High School will be celebrating Pi Day on March 14. We are in the process of organizing a fundraiser which may give a student the opportunity to pie a staff member! Stay tuned to our social media pages to see who is the chosen one!

Thank you for all of your support!

JR/ SR High School Food Pantry

We are thankful for the continued success of our food pantry. The students shop every Friday during their lunch periods and are able to pick up their food at the end of the day before they leave.

Multiple people have inquired about monetary and food donations. If you would like to donate to the pantry, you can drop off any items, during school hours, to the board office. If you would like to mail a monetary donation, you can mail it to the school with the attention to Laura Amero.

The school's facebook page will be regularly updated about items that are most needed. For March we are asking for: Cereal, breakfast bars, and jelly. Of course, we will always take any items you want to donate!

Thank you to everyone for all of the inquiries and offers to help. This will be an ongoing project so that we can continue to help support our Windham students and families.

Technology Talk

Teacher: Angie Showalter

Grades: K-12

Ms. Showalter wears many hats in the district: she teaches 5th grade science, K-8 STEM, and co-teaches a STEM high school course with Mrs. Brundage. She has embraced her role as a current tech team member with a fearless mentality. Ms. Showalter has broadened her professional knowledge within her field by becoming a member of several social media groups on Facebook where she receives ideas for classroom activities and projects. She has been flexibly implementing various blended learning strategies within her 5th grade science classes and is always seeking out high-quality online resources. Ms. Showalter excels in giving students choice. When you walk into her room, you will immediately notice that she offers students a mix of individual, partner, and small group learning opportunities. She also provides them with digital choice boards and uses Hyperdocs which is based off of student-centered learning (see an example below). She positively models the tenets of an effective 21st century educator. She understands the importance of continuous learning and keeps an open mind in regards to new resources and instructional strategies. Ms. Showalter is intentionally reflective about her work which will continue to benefit the students of Windham for years to come.

Teaching Your Child Empathy and Kindness

This month's portal connects with March's theme of kindness. Windham is lucky when it comes to showing empathy to one another-our students and community have a strong understanding of the power of a kind gesture. It seems like with our current society and state of affairs, kindness is needed more than ever in schools and homes. According to the State of the Kid Survey from 2017, nearly half of the kids answered that they want a kinder world. Together, we can help create a kinder, more accepting world for one another.
