One Night, Seven Churches - Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday marks the day that Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper and ordained the apostles. The evening liturgy begins the Paschal Triduum that continues through Good Friday, Holy Saturday and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday. The Holy Thursday service typically ends in silence and some time for parishioners to pray in front of the Holy Eucharist.
Your grandparents may remember this tradition from their childhood when “there was a Church on every corner!” We’re reviving the tradition, even tho we may now be driving from one parish to another, because making a pilgrimage reminds us God is with us as we journey through life!
The practice of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday is believed to have originated in ancient Rome, where there are seven large Churches that circle the city and early Christian pilgrims visited them as an act of penance for their sins.
Here’s a list of some of the westside parishes to get you started. Create your own pilgrimage– if you want to add other parishes visit the interactive Diocesan website: http://oprp.dor.org/map/ Typically the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ends with prayer & benediction about 20 minutes before the end of Adoration unless noted.
