EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER October 17, 2016
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Greetings to our FSA Friends and Families,
In this issue of our weekly newsletter, I would like to re-visit our school's core values of “Excellence, Innovation, and Character.” Specifically, I'd like to talk about "character."
Many of you may have heard me say that “It is not enough to be smart. Nobody wants only smart people around.” Our workplaces, our communities, and society, in general, needs successful people who also:
- Care about others;
- Offer a hand to the needy;
- Celebrate individuals' differences;
- Find ways to help and improve the world around them;
- Respect everyone’s rights and help to protect them;
- Value kindness and compassion (and the list goes on).
In this regard, I consider our school community to be a very fortunate place where we do not need to look far to find great role models. For example, just this weekend:
- A group of parents took the time to decorate our school for the Fall season. Did they need to do it? No. But they chose to do it because they care.
- Another group of parent volunteers took the time to paint some of our school walls with beautiful colors. This was done to continue to make our school feel comfortable and inviting to those who spend so much time here.
- An FSA family made an incredibly generous donation to help our school (please read the article below.) Understanding that funding outside of tuition alone is an important part of a private school's success and longevity, this family's generosity will benefit many of our students.
- Several students and parents volunteered at a local community festival where a number of community members had a great time with their families learning about other cultures, enjoying music, dancing, and delicious food.
- A number of teachers and parents took the time to further their weekend studies, participate in school field trips, coordinate events with their students, attend competitions, etc. Additionally, several of our teachers even visited students in their homes as part of the FSA home visit program.
In my time at FSA, over and over, I have seen our students helping one other and helping our community. I was very touched when a group of students acted so thoughtfully and decorated a locker that belongs to a new student for her birthday, thinking that no one might do it since she was new at our school.
The successful fundraising campaign for pediatric cancer research last month was another prime example of our students’ compassionate character; a true gift that we have witnessed together. Just this evening, our own City Council showed tremendous kindness and character by inviting our school to receive a proclamation recognizing the school's fundraising efforts last month to support CURE. Coverage of the school's fundraising event continues throughout local media; you may read a recent news clip that appeared in the Roswell/Alpharetta Herald by clicking here.
It is clear to me that our students know that it is not enough to be smart. They use their bountiful wings of character and excellence as two caring eyes...not only to fly around and observe the world around them but also to make it a better place for all of us.
What an inspiration our students provide, each and every day. Thank you to our incredible families and friends for all you do to support Fulton Science Academy and the incredible children we are so honored to teach here.
With eternal gratitude to be a part of such a caring community,
Kenan Sener

Alpharetta City Mayor Presents FSAPS With Official Proclamation
We would like to thank everyone at the City Council for inviting us to this evening's meeting, as well as our parent volunteers who joined. We appreciate the support of our elected officials greatly and feel so lucky to be a part of the wonderful Alpharetta community.
Novak Family Foundation Makes Generous $12,000 Gift to Support Fulton Science Academy
1. An anti-bullying awareness campaign to benefit students.
2. The addition of a new wildlife/environmental preservation club to be introduced in the second semester for students.
3. Exterior beautification efforts to support the school's upcoming building expansion plan.
When asked why the family's foundation chose to support FSA, Mrs. Novak commented, "Well, it's been said that you should be the change that you want to see in the world... today, tomorrow and always. I think our family recognizes the importance of this statement and we realize the unique opportunity we have to put those words into motion."
When asked why the family foundation chose to make such a generous contribution to FSA, she responded, "Making an investment in Fulton Science Academy Private School made perfect sense...not only are we supporting our son's educational future, but we hope this donation will benefit other students AND help encourage other families (and the companies they work for and/or own) to donate funds to the school as well. We have witnessed such inspiring changes in our son, Aidan, since he began at FSA last year. To us, FSA feels like home. That, in and of itself, is such a gift to our family, and I suspect other families feel the same way...that FSA is like a second home."
We hope it goes without saying that the Novak Family Foundation's donation is greatly appreciated and is already being put to great use. Plans are in motion for several anti-bullying outreach initiatives, and dialogue has begun to discuss the addition of a new environmental club next semester. Discussions are also occurring to plan how a portion of their contribution can support landscape beautification efforts in conjunction with the proposed campus expansion.
Gifts such as these are not only greatly appreciated, but they help to ensure a strong future for our school. Thank you to the Novak Family Foundation for a gift that will truly keep on giving for years to come.
To learn more about how you can make a tax-deductible donation to support Fulton Science Academy and the many programs and services offered here, please email Advancement Director, Megan Bowman, at mbowman@fultonscienceacademy.org. Thank you!

Well, it’s way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (10+ members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format.
And Fulton Science Academy will join the fun this year, with a brand new rookie team that is excited to participate in its first regional competition on Saturday, November 5.
Students who comprise Team Syntax Error #11420 FTC have had two months to learn and explore concepts together. Some worked well, others required modifications, and some failed. But through each experience came learning.
After many hours of hard work, the team's robot includes four modules: chassis, collector brush, surgical tube lifter and flicker. These will be implemented during the competition as the robot responds to challenges and missions placed
As the rookie team, our team has done a great job to finished 4 modules in a short time. Good luck Syntax Error #11420 on regional completion on November 5th.

Mustang Players Announce Upcoming Production
Fulton Science Academy is so pleased to have many new additions to the Mustang Players this year; students ranging from 6th grade to 10th are hard at work rehearsing on Monday and Friday afternoons for their winter production, "Black Boot’s Lost Loot."
This one-act comedy chronicles the rivalry between two pirate crews, Black Boot and his men and Scurvy Sal’s crew of lady pirates. Be prepared for a whirlwind of treasure hunts, mistaken identities, and pirate romance. Shiver me timbers!
Through this work, students have the chance to memorize lines, learn about stage presence and voice control, and even lend a hand with set design and costuming. It is certainly hard work, but in the end, the cast members are left with memories that last a lifetime.
Please mark your calendars for Black Boot’s Lost Loot; the show opens on on December 8 and ticket information will be forthcoming.
Student Council Elects Representatives
The Student Council has had only had a few meetings so far this year, but members are working hard to represent their peers.

President: Sophie R.
Vice President: Ameiya R.
Treasurer: Sanjeev U.

Middle/ High School Journalism Club Creates Student Newsletter
This year’s Journalism Club is currently working on creating a student newsletter. The club’s goal is to produce a newsletter at least once a month.
During the first month, the club members learned interviewing skills and the format and content of news reports. Afterward, each student was given a topic to investigate and write for the newsletter.
Under the direction of editor Chloe R., the first edition of the newsletter should be ready for publication soon.
The students in the club are trying to report on issues relevant to students and start monthly columns related to student interests. The first edition will feature articles such as students illegally downloading apps to their iPads, students’ reactions to their lunch times, faculty Promethean boards in classrooms, the PokemanGo craze, and the results of students’ opinions regarding their choices in the upcoming presidential election.
Club members include Regina C., Ariana I., Chase J., Pratik P., Riya P., Chloe R., and Arnav S. Mr. Craig is the sponsor. The club meets on Tuesdays in room M11.
The club is also privileged to have parent volunteer Rookmin M., a former print and broadcast journalist, as a special advisor.

Ms. Fuchs’ hands on science club
Ms. Fuchs’ hands on science club is very interactive! Every week, the students observe different experiments through inquiry and using the 5 senses. Learning about science is much more exciting for students with stimulating activities like studying engineering by creating an aluminum foil boats in order to “save Ms. Fuchs”. The students have been investigating the world around them and why things happen through hands on science activities!
This month we have been focusing on “fall themed” science investigations! Last week we created building structures using only toothpicks and candy corn! Take a look at what we created!

FSA home visits offer a unique experience for both our teachers and families. If you haven't yet registered, we encourage you to please consider it.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.

FSA's A-Z Directory Needs Your Input
Hello, parents!
I'm writing to ask that you please check your email for information concerning the A to Z directory. This service is being provided by the school's Mustang Support Organization and provides immediate access to our student and family information.
To ensure this service is fully functional, please log into the A-Z Directories using information sent to you previously via email and verify your contact information. All data verification needs to occur prior to Sept 29th.
An email was sent to you earlier from the Mustang Support Organization with details about how to register. Please check your email to retrieve this email if necessary.
MSO Activity Fees Now Due
The A-Z Directory, along with many other programs and services coordinated by the MSO, helps our school enjoy the quick rewards of modern technology.
With that said, our ability to provide services such as these that are not included in your child's tuition hinges upon every family paying their child's mandatory MSO fee. This fee is $100 per student for the entire school year.
If you have not yet paid your child's activity fee, please do so. These funds are critical in providing many services and opportunities for our students. If you have already paid, thank you!
As always, please direct questions and comments to me directly. Checks can be delivered to the front office made out to the "Mustang Support Organization." You can also pay online by clicking here and marking "MSO" in the purpose area.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Amanda Crigler

Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.

How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
