Week of May 22, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Friends, Families, and FSA Supporters...
It is hard to believe that the final week of the 2016-17 school year is now upon us! Over the course of the past ten months, it has been an absolute honor and a privilege to teach your children. As we head into the summer, may we all carry with us countless memories of an incredible year spent together as FSA Mustangs!
I'd like to issue heartfelt congratulations to all of our students and our teacher-mentors for their diligence in creating insightful STEAM projects. I plan to share more about this huge school-wide project with you in the near future. The project boards are on display in our gym hallway; please stop by to see them as you are here for our end-of-year festivities.
I look forward to our Middle School Talent Show tomorrow, as I am still awed by the sheer ability and expertise of our younger students who performed last Friday. Wow!
As we approach our last day of school this Thursday, I wanted to remind you of a few important items.
- Our Annual Last Blast Carnival is scheduled for this Wednesday, May 24. Our goal is to hold the event outdoors; if the weather is sunny, please remember to send your children with sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water. If rain or storms occur, the festivities will be moved indoors.
- Please remember that on spirit wear days, including Jersey Day this week, students should have bottoms that meet our dress code requirements. Khaki/navy shorts/skorts are acceptable.
- I'd like to wish good luck to our Destination Imagination teams, our Elementary team, "The DI Daredevils" and our High School team, "The Battle of Mountain Dew." These teams are heading to Knoxville, TN for Globals later this week.
- I'd also like to wish best of luck to members of our all-female Robotics team, "Control + Alt + Delete" who are traveling to the University of Bath for the World Open FLL Championships in June.
- Parents of students taking Middle and High School classes please remind your students to check their summer assignments. These assignments will be posted on our FSA website under a new tab called "Summer Reading and Assignments," wish is located under the Academics Tab. These assignments must be completed over the summer, are due the first day of school and assignments WILL be graded. Please click HERE for more details.
- I'd also like to thank our wonderful parent volunteers for the delicious Teacher Lunch last Friday. We have such incredible parents here who do so much to make our staff feel loved and appreciated!
Whether you plan to stay in the area this summer, travel domestically, or are planning a trip abroad, I send my very best wishes to you for a safe and relaxing summer. I hope to see many of our students around campus this summer attending one of the many exciting camps that are being held here.
Until then, thank you for an incredible school year. May this be your happiest and most joyful summer yet!
With Warmest Regards,
Mr. Kenan Sener
Principal

academic team news!
Four FSA Students Bring Home Medals from National Science Olympiad Competition
Four FSA students brought home medals this week from the National Science Olympiad Tournament held this weekend in Ohio. The fifteen member FSA team competed in all 23 Science Olympiad events and medaled in both Fast Facts and Write It Do It.
Fast Facts is fast-paced event testing students’ knowledge of scientific terminology. Two students working as partners have six minutes to complete a grid with 25 scientific terms in specific categories and beginning with specific letters of the alphabet. A tournament consists of three rounds. FSA students Jay E. and Arul S. were awarded 5th place medals in this event.
FSA Fast Facts coach Ashley Sanders said, “I am so proud of these boys. They truly deserve it because they studied and worked so hard to earn these medals. During every one of our practices, they couldn’t get started practicing and studying soon enough, and no matter how long practice was scheduled for, it was never long enough for them. One of their mothers even mentioned that her son had hung the material we were working on all over the house so no matter where he was, he was getting some extra studying time in. It has been such an honor to work with these bright and dedicated young men and I know they have a bright future ahead of them."
Write It Do It is a signature Science Olympiad event in which one team member views a structure built from random materials and then writes a set of instructions on how to build it. The other team member is given the instructions written by their teammate and a set of unassembled materials to attempt to recreate the object as accurately as possible. The team whose model most closely resembles the original structure is declared the winner.
Writer Vihan K. and builder Sophie R. won first place in this event. This was the second consecutive national championship for Sophie who last year won this event with partner, Mira M.
“I certainly knew they were capable of medaling in this event,” said coach Gloria Stathos, “but you never know what materials you will be given and how complex the model will be. In addition, Vihan, our writer, broke his finger two days before the tournament, making the physical task of writing more difficult. To take first place in this event was really a remarkable achievement and to do it two years in a row leaves me in awe.”
Sophie has competed on the Fulton Science Academy team for four years and has competed and medaled in the past three National tournaments earning a total of four National medals and making her FSA’s most decorated Science Olympian.
Congratulations, students!!!
Middle School Science Olympiad Team Places 21st in Nation
The Fulton Science Academy Science Olympiad Team competed in the Science Olympiad National Tournament held May 18-19 at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
The team placed 21st out of 60 middle school teams representing all 50 states.
“This was our peak performance of the year,” said head coach Pam Walsh. “At previous tournaments, we struggled with some of our building events. Sometimes they worked perfectly and other times we had unexpected results. We spent the last six weeks trying to improve our consistency. Our Hovercraft team built a new device and our Wright Stuff team made major modifications to their plane to achieve longer flight times. In Mission Possible, team members added new energy transfers to attain a higher potential score. Our Tower students improved both their design and construction techniques.”
Students continued to work on their academic events as well. “By design, each tournament level gets harder and the National tests have the highest level of difficulty,” said head coach Gloria Stathos. “While we have a coach for each of the 23 Science Olympiad events, students who are selected for our National team are expected to study independently, using their coaches as a resource instead of the sole source for instruction. Team members put in hours of extra work on Science Olympiad in addition to prepping for standardized testing, completing their STEAM enrichment projects.”
National team members included Neel B., Lizzie S., Navina D., Logan K., Njeri L., Ezra N., Isabelle S., Sid T., Arham A., Chance C., Shourya J., Vihan K., Karen P., Arul S., Bella S., Holden W., Jay E., Nicholas F., and Sophie R.

4th and 5th grade Math League Update
More than 30 FSA students participated in the Math League Contest for 4th & 5th graders that was held at FSA on Wednesday, May 17.
For many students, this was the first math contest they had ever experienced and, quite possibly, the most fun they've ever had working on math problems!
All of the questions covered basic 4th and 5th-grade topics, including properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, calendar, shapes, perimeter, money, basic ratio, percent, rounding numbers, remainders, integers, and more!
These contests challenge students to show their understanding of basic principles through both numerical and word problems that encourage an open, flexible approach to problem-solving.
Briefly, each contest consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that can be done in 30 minutes. In this 3-page contest, the questions on the 1st page are generally straightforward, those on the 2nd page are moderate in difficulty, and those on the 3rd page are more difficult.
Congratulations to the top five performers of each contest! Keep up the good work, Math Mustangs!
Top 5 performers at 4th grade Math League Contest
1. Varun G. (second grader)
2. Karthik K.
3. Siddarth S.
4. Neerav S.
5. Eric Y.
6. Sonia H.
Top 5 performers at 5th grade Math League Contest
1. Athiwat A. (Nick A.) - perfect score
2. Ipsita B.
3. Sreshta G.
4. Nihaar P.
5. Yousuf M.
6. Aanchal P.
Tiebreaker: A common tie breaker is used. Since questions are placed in the order of difficulty, starting from Question 30, students missing the most difficult question first, lose the tie.
(Please note that official state-wide results will be announced later in the year.)
FSA Second Grader Secures First Place Award in State Kangaroo Math Competition

FSA Holds Spring Band/Orchestra Concert
The event, which included more than a dozen wonderful songs, as well as solos, and a diverse array of music styles, was a nice culmination to months of hard work from our students, many of whom just began to learn an instrument last August.
Many thanks to both Mrs. Peacock and Dr. Hawk for their leadership and for making this day possible for us all to enjoy together!
Student Spotlight - Meet Rishan and Shivan
Shivan and Rishan were just eight years old when they took their first beginners class at Taido Karate in Atlanta. They were so impressed by the young girls and boys who could count numbers in Japanese and by seeing so many forms of martial arts that they enrolled immediately!
This dojo was more than just a school for learning karate. The twins learned discipline, respect, how to listen, balance, and breathe and how to use different forms of karate to help the mind and body. Taido Karate helped them build confidence, increase concentration, focus and better understand how to cope under pressure. Over almost six years, the boys attended numerous amounts of classes (700 +), tested and graduated through a number of belts. They also attended intensive training during Taido summer camps and volunteered most Saturdays mentoring children at Taido.
They truly enjoyed the Senseis teaching them. They learned leadership skills, social skills and how to embrace another culture. They also cleaned the dojo after classes: mopping and vacuuming the floors, and cleaning the windows. All these useful skills combined helped enhance good character traits. They have had so much fun along the way and made tons of friends. They have the best instructors - the Senseis (with ample years of experience) who helped provide Shivan and Rishan with a good structure of a positive environment and support to succeed.
Well done, Shivan & Rishan, now in eighth grade, for being nominated for Black Belt Testing through all your hard work and having the ability to juggle everything. We wish you all the best as your Black Belt Training begins and we hope you achieve your goals thanks to all the wonderful Senseis at Taido Karate.

The Character Ed Trait for May is HOPE
It is so important to teach HOPE to students especially before the summer begins. We want our students to look forward to their summer and to look forward to the next school year. Researchers have found that students who are high in hope have greater academic success, stronger friendships, and demonstrate more creativity and better problem-solving. They also have lower levels of depression and anxiety and are less likely to drop out from school.
“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It’s what sunflowers do.” ~Helen Keller
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
