Ways to Make Rest Areas More Sustainable
There are many ways to increase a rest area's sustainability. Some of these ways include:
- Daylighting
- Domestic Solar Hot Water
- Rainwater Catchment
Daylighting
The building allows as much natural light in as possible. By increasing the amount of sunlight, the electricity needed to power artificial lights decreases.
Domestic Solar Hot Water
Three solar panels preheat the hot water used in restrooms.
Rainwater Catchment
Rainwater is collected from the roof and piped to a 26,000- gallon cistern. It is then used to flush toilets and urinals. Reusing rainwater reduces the use of potable water by 70 - 75%.
Benefits of Sustainable Rest Areas
- Lowered carbon footprint
- These buildings are about 37% more efficient than traditional buildings
- Provides a place to learn environmental responsibility
- Saves money due to less use of electricity
