Our purpose was to make a device that will help us measure the elevation of the playground hill. Also draw a topographic map of the playground.

  1. Made a device with meter stick and tape measure
  2. Took our recess to measure
  3. At science time and activity period we will make a s'more
  4. Finish our measuring
  5. Make a topographic map
  6. Present our s'more to the class

Surveyors would use GPS receivers, prisms, 3D scanners, radios, tablets, and surveying software. This was all used to survey. Surveyors purpose are to mostly to make land maps and boundaries for ownership. Also locations like building corners or the surface location of subsurface features, or other purposes required by government or civil law, such as property sales.

Land Surveyers

Land surveying is the very detailed study or inspection. They gather information through observations, measurements in the field, or research of legal instruments, and data analysis in the support of planning, designing, and establishing of property boundaries.

Our Device

We call our device the "Topometer" because we will make a topographic map and we used a meter stick to hold the tape measurer.

How to use our device

First you would have to make sure that the ground is level on the level. Second you would extend the tape measure until it hits the ground or part of hill. Third you would see how long the tape measure went. Lastly you would write it down on a piece of paper.

Our Results:

We learned that their are different types of surveyors. I also learned that surveyors use GPS receivers, prisms, 3D scanners, radios, tablets, and surveying software to survey.

If we could change anything I would change the look of our device. We would also change the meter stick on our device to a thin piece of wood. Lastly we would change the length of our tape measure, because 25 feet was a little bit too short for some of the measurments.

We're still wondering how long it takes for real surveyors to survey a mountain, volcano, or land. I'm also still wondering if we made changes/improvements to our device could we survey the playground faster, and will the changes/improvement make it easier
