Meet Ryan. Ryan is an Eaglet at SELC. Ryan is a PK"er" on a mission who LOVES to give fist bumps!

March 24, 2023

Greeting SELC PK Families,

This past Tuesday was National Down Syndrome Awareness day. With his parents permission, I will share with you that Ryan, has Down Syndrome. SELC is so appreciative of Ryan's family who continues to educate our community about Down Syndrome and provide us with the resources and understanding to help us educate others. See the link above for information and resources from the Down Syndrome Association of CT. Our goal is to help others understand that Ryan is more alike than different from his peers and to eliminate any stereotypes and stigmas that might exist. To show our support we ROCKED OUR SOCKS for RYAN! See the video below.

What is down syndrome part 2
Tis the season for many Spring holidays and special events. The Spring equinox occurs, Easter is celebrated by many, as well as Passover, Holi, and Ramadan.

A Note on Ramadan

Ramadan began on the evening of Wednesday, March 22nd and ends on the evening of Friday, April 21st. Many members of our SELC community observe this special month. As a school community our goal is to be mindful that some of our students, families, and staff may be hungry, thirsty, and tired due to fasting, prayer schedules, and gatherings with friends and family and to adjust routines accordingly. Instead of wishing someone a Happy Ramadan, try out this phrase instead, "Ramadan Kareem”. It means, "Have a generous Ramadan."

Here are some vocabulary words to help deepen our understanding of this holiday:

suhoor: the meal before dawn

iftar: the meal after dusk

Eid al-fitr: The celebration at the end of Ramadan (30 days)

Lailah's Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story, by Reem Faruqi and Lea Lyon

Next week, many Eaglets will be learning about Katherine Johnson and the impact her math skills had on space flights. Who was Katherine Johnson? Scan the QR code to find out!
