News from Mrs. Hilcher-Principal of Grapevine Elementary

Week of September 28-October 2

Brightening the World With Kindness

Last Friday afternoon, the GES students and staff gathered to kick off Rachel's Challenge for the year. This year's theme, Brightening the World With Kindness, was evident as you glanced around the cafeteria at all the bright neon clothing! Our wonderful counselor, Mrs. Horn, arranged for the CHHS drumline and the CHHS Peer Assistance Leadership Service (PALS) to join in our assembly. The drumline did a wonderful job setting the tone for such an exciting kick-off event! Students watched a short video explaining Rachel's Challenge and the importance of recognizing acts of kindness and compassion each day. The PALS shared all about their 'Water is Basic' project and encouraged our students to look for ways to help out others at school, in our community and our world. It was a great message from students in our very own district! Both groups represented CHHS well and were great examples for our students.

Mrs. Horn and I spoke with the students about the importance of bringing positive change to the lives of others. I had the privilege of introducing two of our own third graders who started Friendship Fridays at GES last year. These young ladies recognize the importance of having a friend to play with at recess. Their desire to include everyone while playing at recess, has led to their motto: Be a friend. Share the friendship. We will be honoring their idea by making an extra effort to include students in the friendship zone on both of our playgrounds during recess. The friendship zone will be a designated area that students can go if they need someone to play with while outside. Students who notice a peer inside this 'zone' will go and invite them to play.

This year, we will be creating digital links rather than the paper chains like in the past. Students will simply scan a QR code and complete an online form in order to capture acts of kindness they witness while at school. We will be calculating monthly totals for each grade level and displaying them on the Wall of Fame in the cafeteria. Starting in October, the grade level with the highest number of links each month will earn a special recess with Mrs. Horn, Mrs. Hilcher & Ms. Ray! We are looking forward to a wonderful year full of chain reactions of kindness and compassion at Grapevine Elementary!

Volunteer Orientation

If you are planning to volunteer at GES this year, we need YOU! We will be hosting two different opportunities for Volunteer Orientation trainings on Monday, October 5. The morning option will start at 8:15am and will take place in the GES Cafeteria. Please plan to check in and get a visitor's badge once the morning announcements are complete, around 7:55. The evening option will start at 6:30pm in the Library/Learning Commons. Hope to see you next Monday!

iStation Information

iStation is an online reading and math program that our Kindergarten through fifth grade students utilize. This computer adaptive program has practice components, progress monitoring, instruction and assessments. Lessons are specifically aligned to your child's level and provide valuable practice. We encourage you to check out the parent portal for information regarding your child's current level and progress.
Last week, we received clarification from iStation. We do not currently have iStation Math at home. They are still working out some configuration issues and broadening the scope of iStation at home for math. We hope that you will find the reading practice at home a valuable tool for your child.

Subscription Payments

We are collecting money for Scholastic News magazine in grades 1-5. Kindergarten does not have a grade level option at this time. We apologize for any confusion this detail may have caused Kindergarten families. We are only collecting money from 1st-5th grade students. Please send only checks or money orders for $5.50 made out to GES. Students will receive a magazine each week that they will read and utilize in class and/or for homework.

Shoparoo Fundraising

This year Grapevine Elementary PTA is excited to be partnering with a fun, free, and truly easy fundraiser called Shoparoo! Schools nationwide are already earning hundreds and even thousands every year through Shoparoo and it’s a great opportunity for us to really make a difference this year!

Shoparoo is school fundraising made easy: the free app turns pictures of your everyday shopping receipts into cash donations and sweepstakes entries for our school! Yep, it’s that simple. No more selling door to door or time-consuming coordinating. All you have to do is shop as you normally do, snap pictures of your receipts with the app, and voila Just shop, snap, earn!

Get started today:

1. Download the free Shoparoo app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

2. Select Grapevine Elementary, Grapevine, TX from the list and start taking pictures of your receipts - shop anywhere, buy anything!

3. Earn even more Roo Points, or cash donations, by inviting others to join using your personal referral code

4. You can even select a grade to support and have fun with grade competitions!

There’s no limit to how much money we can raise with Shoparoo - the more supporters, the more we will raise for our school. Schools with just 40 supporters are earning an average of $1,000 every year. That’s free, easy money that we could be fundraising too. Check out to learn more about this awesome app!

Thank you for supporting the GES PTA.

"Walk and Roll" to School-Oct. 7th!

Join kids at GES and around the nation in celebrating "Walk and Roll" to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7th! Walking to school is fun, provides good exercise, reduces air pollution, and builds a sense of community. This is our 4th year to celebrate this event at GES and we would love to set a new record for the number of students walking and rolling to school. The current record is 411 students!

To get the word out, we are inviting all GES stars to create a poster celebrating the benefits of walking and rolling to school. The posters will be judged and all participants will earn prizes, with the top winners receiving passes to Skatetown or Jumpstreet! Posters are now due on Wednesday, 9/30.

For those who live too far to walk, we welcome you to join us at Glade Landing Park near the corner of Baze and Haydenbend at 7:15am. If you would like to lead a group of students from your neighborhood or need more information, please contact Betsy Marsh We hope to see you on the streets on Oct. 7th!
