Central Elementary: Helping All Kids Find Their Genius

Week of November 16, 2015

Message from Mrs. Hill

It has been so wonderful to see the spirit of giving evident in our school. Our coat drive box has been filled multiple times this week, and we have had many cans of food sent to school for our canned food drive. Toys have been coming in to fill our toy drive basket. It warms my heart to see our kids wanting to give and support their community.

During this last week before fall break, we know our kids will continue to consider the needs of others, and extend kindness through smiles, high fives, or kind favors. This is what our Central family is all about! Basic needs are a must, but we want to always remind our kids the importance of making people feel safe and cared for. Kindness rules, always!

We are so grateful to The Union Pacific Railroad for donating $1,000 to our school to purchase technology! We will be ordering Chromebooks for our students to use during the instructional day. Thank you to the Thiele family for sharing our story to Union Pacific.

Check out our new website! It is much easier to navigate, and you can view the @CentralCabotpK4 Twitter feed to follow our days!

Have a wonderful week!

Hearts of Kids Who Want to Help Those in Need

The following story was written by one of our very own students, and she shares how her classroom extended support to kids in another state after a natural disaster.

What We Did to Help a School in Need! by: Allison Clark, 4th Grade Student at Central Elementary

When Mrs.Coyle told my classroom how Hurricane Joaquin hit South Carolina my heart was pounding with sorrow! But, when Mrs.Coyle said we were going to donate school supplies to a school that got hit by Hurricane Joaquin I got so excited for them! First of all, I had A LOT of books to donate. Second of all, I knew we were doing something thoughtful for people that were in need. I donated a lot of books! Hopefully those kids are enjoying the school supplies we sent them. I feel really good about helping people in need because it makes me smile and my heart smile! Someday maybe those kids will help people in need like me and my class did for them. Alyssa and Brooklyn sent letters to the school along with the school supplies so they knew who it was from. Then the General Manager from Crain Ford in Jacksonville, Bob Woller, paid to get our box of donated supplies shipped to a school in Columbia, South Carolina. He’s so awesome to do that for us. Everyone can do what my class did. If you don’t want to do something like what we did, that’s okay! Everybody’s different in a different way. Just be creative and help people in need!

Canned Food Drive through November 17

We are collecting canned food items to benefit families in our area. Collection boxes are located in each classroom. We encourage you to contribute by sending canned food items to school with your child between November 2 and November 17. Together, our school family will make a difference to those in need.

Thank you!

Christmas for Kids Toy Drive and Coat Drive

Central will be collecting new toys for our community's outreach, Christmas for Kids. There is a collection box at the entrance of our building!

We are also collecting coats for our community. If you are looking to clear out a closet, or have kids' coats that are too small, send them to school and we will find a home for them! We are accepting coats/jackets of all sizes.

It is an awesome experience to teach our kids the giving spirit, and to have empathy in their hearts for those in need.

Central Bookstore is Open!

The Central bookstore is open! We will be ready for business each Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7:35. A cart will be in the front of the building so kids can stop by and shop. We will close before the first bell rings so all kids get to class on time! If you bring your child to school after 7:45, you will want to make plans to arrive earlier in order to shop at the bookstore on the days it is open.

We have brand new Central water bottles for sale! The cost is $3.00. Purchase yours today!

December 3 Is Our Next CIA Meeting!

Social Media and Technology 101 for Families

Join us from 5:30-6:30 for a conversation about social media and technology to help you stay plugged in to our school and community. We will discuss our school and district website, the district app, our school's Smore electronic newsletter, and our Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook feeds. We will also discuss the Remind app that many of our teachers and Mrs. Hill use for communication.

We will discuss the Shoparooo app and how you can help us raise money for our school!

Feel free to bring your smartphone and any other mobile device you use. We have wifi in the building for your connectivity, and will have Chromebooks available for your use during this meeting. Our staff wants you to feel comfortable with the way we commuicate, and to share ideas of how we can improve. We send home information in a paper format that includes important dates, but know that many would rather access information via social media, as well as follow our school day happenings. Your input is appreciated!

Make time each week for family reading! Not only is this quality time to spend with kids, but it feeds their brains! Reading to and with your child supports the love of literacy, and reading in front of your child models the importance of reading. Take a few moments each evening to read together as a family, to read aloud to your child, or to listen to your child read. Remember, it doesn't always have to be a book! You can read magazines, articles, poetry, something on the web, a recipe, pamphlet, brochure, etc. Reading is EVERYWHERE!

Share your photos from home of your family taking opportunities to read! You can email them to Mrs. Hill, tweet them and tag us @CentralCabotpK4, or post to our school Facebook page.

Shoparoo: A Way to Raise Funds for OUR Kids!

We have almost earned $200 for our school through Shoparoo! As of Sunday morning at 11:45 am, we have accumulated 78,330 Roo Points, and have 91 supporters. Our school wants to reach 100 users and 100,000 points before Christmas break! This goal would help us reach the $200 mark and beyond! Every little amount helps, so between Shoparoo, Box Tops, Marcos Pizza, and any other initiative we take on, we can earn cash rewards for our school and avoid fundraising as much as possible.

You can join Shoparoo with the following code: lang5526

What Will Shoparoo Funds Help Purchase?

We need more Chromebooks for our students. The goal is to have a 1:1 setting in third and fourth grades! This means there is a Chromebook (laptop device) for each student´s use throughout a school day. We have several devices currently and want to add more. We would also like to add to our second grade classrooms in the future, and have 1:1 tablets for our kindergarten and first grade kids.

Box Tops for Education

Our school collects Box Tops for Education, so please be saving these at home! We are hoping to purchase a brand new flag pole for our campus. The funds we raise with Box Tops will help us achieve our goal.

Below are links to some collection pages for Box Tops. You are free to print these, or you may ask your child to pick up a sheet at school! We will have them available for you.

We will offer bookstore coupons to kids who return filled Box Tops sheets! These coupons will give them discounts on items in our bookstore. We will be purchasing more items for our store and will soon share those with you!
