Sipley School Parent Newsletter

Monday, April 11, 2016

Loving children is one important part of teaching as a willingness to learn is intertwined with a strong and caring relationship between student and teacher. But, teaching must also be paired with high expectations for learning along with guidance to help all students reach grade level standards. If teaching is a laissez-faire endeavor solely built on a love of learning, without an academic focus, academic gaps will no doubt emerge.

PARCC Testing for Grades 3 through 6

PARCC testing begins on Monday. I have sent parents dates/times of all testing. I have a voice mail message set to go out on Sunday evening to remind parents. Why so much attention to this? I have about 20-30 students showing up late each day. If students are late, they will sit in the office until 10:30 and they will have to make-up the test they missed on another day, which will result in a loss of instructional time.

Sipley School Comment Box

I have a comment box located outside my office. The comment box is designed to provide students (and parents) a place to share positive comments about Sipley School with me. It is also designed to provide a place where students can anonymously share concerns they have, such as perceived bullying. Students can drop a note in the box with enough information for me to act on. This is aimed at providing all students with a voice so that we can eliminate barriers that prevent students from working at their optimal level.

Recognizing our Students

Thanks to our STP, we are rewarding all students between now and the end of the year with a reward for great behavior. Teachers are recognizing students for excellent choices and sending them to my office where they share their great work with me and choose a small item from our reward bin. Our bin includes small toys, flavored chap stick, head phones, and playground equipment.
