Our policy of only one volunteer day per year will still be in place, as well as the policy of needing to be trained on January 11th if you were not trained last year. Word of the Month
Welcome back and Happy New Year! Our word for the month of January is “Knowledge: Discovering something new so you can be better at whatever you do.” With all there is to know and discover in the world, it can be overwhelming. But what if it’s not all about the facts we are learning? What if we believe that everything we learn makes us better at whatever we do? Instead of thinking of knowledge as something to gather and store up, think about it as helping you to get better at other things you like to do.
Ask yourself, “What way do you learn best: By hearing about things? By reading about things? By trying things yourself? Ask a grown up: What subject did you learn in school that you use a lot in your adult life? How do you learn new things now? What is something new you learned recently?
“Knowledge is power,” and the more knowledge that you have, the better off in life you will become! So now, with this “new knowledge, you can love and appreciate school (even more than you do now) each and every single day!
Horizons/Gifted & Talented Testing Update
If you referred your child to be tested for the Horizons (GT) program, testing will begin on Friday, January 6, and concludes on February 10. Letters were sent home on December 14, 2016, indicating the specific dates of testing for your child to be tested.
Kindergarten results are anticipated to be sent home at the end of February, and services for qualified Kindergarten students (only) will begin March 1, 2017.
All 1st-5th grade results are anticipated to be sent home in May, and services for qualified 1st-5th grade students will begin in the 2017-2018 school year.
Are you Interested in Becoming a Mentor?
We need you! Are you interested in making a difference in a child’s life? The Cy-Fair Mentor program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from buisnesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community, and Cy-Fair ISD designed to encourage students (K-12) to finish school and to focus on future education goals and career choices. A committed mentor can be a wonderful role-model by helping a student with his/her academic and social development.
If you are interested in making a commitment to a child here at Hamilton Elementary, you will first need to attend a district training session at the Berry Center, and complete a mentor application. If you would like to get more information, or to sign up for a training session and access the mentor applications, you can log onto the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/mentor, or contact Leslie Francis in the Community Engagement Department at leslie.francis@cfisd.net or at 281-894-3950.
