FACTS!

  • Premature babies are infants born before 37 complete weeks of pregnancy.
  • Over half a million babies are born premature in the U.S each year!
  • Because preemies miss the vital stages of growth and development in the last months, they are much smaller than full-term newborns.
  • Causes for premature birth is still unknown.

NICU FACTS!

  • NICU stands for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit .
  • The NICU is an intensive care unit that specializes in the care of ill or premature newborns.
  • Neonatal refers to "neo" which means new and "natal" which pertains to birth or origin.
  • There are three different care levels of the NICU.

History of the NICU!

When: The first NICU was established in 1961.

Where: It was established at Vanderbilt University.

By: Professor Mildred Stahlman was the founder of the first NICU.

Common Medical Issues in the NICU!

Most infants are admitted into the NICU within the first 24 hours after birth.


The length of stay in the NICU all depend on the severity of a baby's medical and physical condition.


Many of the same medical issues are faced by many infants in the NICU.


Some of those illnesses include:


  • Jaundice, Heart defects, respiratory problems, anemia, hypoglycemia, and several others.
