Pierre Elliot Trudeau's Leadership
By: Jefferey Dam
Background
Pierre Trudeau, born on October, 18, 1919, died September, 28, 2000. He is one of Canda's most well known Canadians. As the 15th prime minister he spent his 16 years in power changing Canada into what we are today. The introduction of universal health care and welcoming of immigrants are just a few things he did to show his leadership. He took care of all his crisises and protected Canada from situation that could've ruined our nation.
What He Did To Make Him A Leader
While in power Canada was being impacted by the cold war. As NATO and the Soviet Union's warsaw pact fought for control of the east, Canada had their own problems. As a result of the Quiet Revolution, Quebec saught out their indeptendence with terrorism if nessassary. Trudeau ended the conflict with inforcing the War measure act. This gave the governmentthe power to accuse anyone suspisious of terrorism, taking away citizen rights. it all payed off though as the crisis ended on December, 3rd. This showed what Trudeau is willing to do for the country. Another huge action Trudeau created was the Charter of rights and freedom. he faught for Canadian's individual rights and successfullly seperated us from Queen Elizibeth II's Great Britain. As a leader he took risks hat payed off and gave Canadians their own rights.
How Did He Show Leadership
As a prime minster its their duty to help make a change for the better for our country. When Trudeau was in power he not only introduced new things but stopped changes from affecting Canada. For example in the 1960's oil prices were about to skyrocket. canadians would now have to pay more for oil they were used to paying cheap for. Trudeau objected the idea and forced Aberta's oil company to lower oil prices for Canadians. Just like in any other country, oil is issential for the economy. Bumping up the prices for the country that you get the oil didn't seem very good. Stopping it showed that Trudeau cares about the citizens and acted on the situation.
Leadership Traits
first off i see Trudeau following the "appearences matter" trait. Outside of the house of commons, Trudeau was a man that acted a like more goofy than other. This gave him the nickname " Trudeaumania", his personality attracted the attention of teenagers and adults. It increased his popularilty and quickly came into power. Secondly, I think he followed the " nothing is black or white" trait. Nothing he did came out easily. He took the risk of invoking the war measure act and it took time before he could separate our nation from great Britain. Lastly he followed the "quiting is leadin too" trait. When Trudeau's governments attempted to contain withwage and price control, it caused economic difficulties and a sense of alienation in Western Canada. As a reult of deciding not to be leader of the opposition, Trudeau announced his resignition. However, one year later, he came back into power showing that he failed but got back up.
Conclusion
Nelson Mandela and Pierre Trudeau are two examples of excellent leaders. They fought for what they believed in and their actions changed the way people live together. Mandela was successful in bringing black and white people together, and Trudeau gave Canadains their own rights and freedoms.
