Overview of Teaching & Learning
Programming is the process of selecting and sequencing learning experiences which enable students to engage with syllabus outcomes and develop subject specific skills and knowledge. The process of programming is typically shared and offers an opportunity for collaboration, professional reflection and evaluation.
Programs:
- reflect the needs, interests and abilities of students
- are based on syllabus outcomes and include a variety of teaching, learning and embedded assessment activities, strategies and resources to address the learning needs of all students
- are flexible and dynamic documents that change in response to student learning needs, school context, teacher evaluation and feedback
English
During literacy sessions, students will use a range of skills and strategies to read, interpret and discuss various texts. Students will continue to apply a range of comprehension strategies, with teaching focusing on visualising and questioning.
In Spelling, students will use knowledge of letter–sound correspondence, sight words and regular spelling patterns to accurately spell known words and an increasing number of irregularly spelt words.
This term in Speaking and Listening, students will learn what it takes to be an active listener. They will continue to develop skills to learn that spoken language has a range of purposes and audiences and use this knowledge when attempting to communicate effectively with others.
In Grammar, students will learn about different types of clauses, conjunctions and compound sentences. They will identify and use emotive language. Knowledge of punctuation will be extended to include question marks and exclamation marks.
Mathematics
Students count, order, read and write two- and three-digit numbers and use a range of strategies and recording methods. They will learn various mental strategies and use concrete materials to solve problems, focusing on multiplication and division. Students will learn how to round three-digit numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds. They will count, order and read the value of Australian coins in multiple combinations. Students will describe and continue a variety of number patterns and build number relationships
In other mathematics strands, students will identify the area of rectangles using formal and informal units, as well as, identify, describe, sort and model particular two-dimensional shapes. They will also learn the seasons and months of the year and how to read calendars and time on analogue clocks.
Science & Technology
HSIE (History)
- The Year 2 history unit for Semester 1 provides a study of local history. Students explore, recognise and appreciate the history of their local area by examining remains of the past and considering why they should be preserved. They pose questions about the past and use sources provided (such as physical, visual, oral) to answer these questions. They compare objects from the past and present and deliver their research in various ways.
Creative Arts
In music lessons with Mrs French, students are continuing to learn about rhythm and beat as well as the use of simple time signatures.
Personal Development, Health, Physical Education
Students are expected to participate in 150 minutes of physical activity each week. This is predominantly through Be Skilled, Be Fit and grade sport. The balance is achieved through class activities.
Library
This term we will continue with our unit on the Mr Chicken series by Leigh Hobbs. These books will be used as stimulus for research and writing tasks. Students will continue to develop their skills using Google Classroom and presenting their work using Google Slides and Book Creator on the iPads. Students will also continue to be encouraged to participate in the 2021 Premier's Reading Challenge as part of their school home reading program.
