Focus Skill: Summarizing
We will be working to master summarizing with just the right amount of details! :) We have started reading Shiloh as a class. We will be working to summarize each chapter and at the end will summarize the story! After your child reads each night, ask them to give you a quick summary of what they read.
We use these formats:
Fiction:
Somebody (Main Character)
Wanted to (Their plan)
But (Problem)
So (Steps to solving)
Then (Solution)
Non-Fiction:
State main idea and give 4 supporting details.
Writing:
We will be incorporating our Social Studies into our writing! We will be researching Famous Missourians and writing an informational report.
Spelling:
We will not have a spelling list this week due to our spelling cycle being shortened by 2 days. We will start fresh on Friday. Instead, we will be learning about figurative language!!
Good sites for practice:
Spelling City (Login is in binder)
Look, Cover, Write (They have to type in their list before they begin)
Math:
Tomorrow, we will begin a unit from a different math program-Engage NY. We have used this program for fractions as a supplement to Everyday Math for the past few years. We feel that it is the right amount of repetition and to taught to the correct depth of knowledge that they will need for fifth grade. Fifth grade teachers have commented on how much more prepared the kids have been on fractions since we started doing this. We will not be sending home homework as there is a lot of vocabulary involved and the way it is taught is so different that we don't want you to struggle to teach them and accidentally teach them wrong. I do have instructional videos that I can share if your child does need extra practice and you can use those as your teaching tool!! I would say that we will probably stay in Engage NY with Fractions up until Spring Break.

Famous Missourian Research
February 1st from 6:30-7:00.
We are doing all of the research at school and preparing their speech. At home, please work on getting a costume ready and practice their speech with them once it is complete.
The kids have placed two study sheets for states and capitals in the back of their HOOT Binders. (We will not be testing until March/April)
**In addition to the capitals, they need to know the location of each state.
We will expand our studies of regions from Missouri to the United States. We will focus on how land, climate and the economy compare and contrast across our country.
Art Junk
Please help us collect fun materials to create an animal mask.
We need Gallon Plastic Milk Jugs! See the sample picture above. We will use one side per student, but pass out the other for a friend - please cut the jug ahead of time to save (my hand) and time! :)
Also collect JUNK we can use to build our animal form - TP Tubes, small butter containers - lids etc! Have your child bring in a bag labeled with their name and teacher!
Trivia Night
Kellison's Trivia Night is quickly approaching on February 4th. We hope you'll consider putting together a table for this evening. Trivia Night is our PSO's largest fundraiser for the year. Proceeds from this evening support our students in countless ways.
Our event will be held at Andre's West beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th. The cost per table of eight is $200.
