St. Therese Weekly Newsletter - October 21, 2020

We've got spirit...and we almost have phones!

What a wild ride this school year has shaped up to be! Let's recap:

  • Distance Learning
  • Smoke and Fires
  • WiFi Connectivity
  • Phones struggled...then died
  • New Chromebooks stuck overseas
  • Still COVID

All that and it's still October! Look at all we have been able to overcome as a community. Yes, we are still dealing with COVID, and with numbers going up we will likely continue to deal with it for some time. The smoke blew away and the fires are no longer a threat, our wifi has improved tremendously after some upgrades, and our phones should be up and running with the new install in a few weeks. The biggest news is the donation of new Chromebooks to our school by an anonymous donor, which allowed us to cancel the order that was stuck overseas waiting to ship. God is good!

We are still dealing with the impacts of a pandemic on our community, but the key to this is that we are dealing with it. We are standing together; sometimes laughing, sometimes crying, and always grateful for the opportunity that each new day brings.

Last night I was searching through emails looking for the original picture day forms from La Salle because I forgot to order photos for our son, Lucas (don't be like me, order from Lifetouch today!) and I stumbled across my first letter to you all. It was so hopeful, so optimistic, so LONG AGO! July feels like a lifetime in the past, and yet just like yesterday. We have come so far together that I ask you to remember all of our successes when you feel defeated or frustrated. Parenting during this time is challenging. Teaching during this time is challenging. Being a kid during this time is challenging. We just need to continue reaching for the light wherever we can find it - for me, that's all of you.

Thank you for trusting us with your greatest treasures - your children. Our prayer, each day, is for their safety, protection, and happiness. May God continue to bless our St. Therese community, and shine His loving light on all of us.

Principal, St. Therese School

Supply Drive-thru from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

If your child's teacher has communicated to you that there are materials they will need to pick up this Friday, please come by and see us between 2 and 4:30. We love these opportunities to connect with you!

Sometimes teachers send materials home with students who attend Limited In-Person (LIP) Learning time, so you may not need to pick up every week.

Picture Day - October 22nd and 23rd

We have lots of students signed up for photos this Thursday and Friday. If you need help signing up, please call the school and we will be happy to assist you!

Students who attend LIP on Thursday will take their school picture while they are on campus, and all those who do not attend will need to sign up for a picture time.

Photo packages can be ordered online ahead of time, or up to 24 hours after picture day. Please see the information below to learn more about picture packages and the process for keeping our students and staff safe!

Thursday 10/22 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Friday 10/23 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Uniforms are NOT required - students can wear free dress. If you'd like a photo in uniform, they are welcome to come dressed that way.

Retakes are scheduled for December 4th.

The link to sign up for a picture time can be found in an email from your child's teacher sent last week. If you need us to resend it, please let us know! The newsletter is shared widely, so we avoid including links like the sign-up in the newsletter.

When you arrive for your picture appointment:

1. Please park your car and walk your student into the gym

2. Staff will take your temperatures and show you where to wait for your photo

3. Someone will be available to help you order photos online if you need assistance

4. Someone will be available to take your order form/cash/check if you have one

5. The photographer can NOT make change, so please bring the exact amount

6. Remain socially distanced and masked at all times. Students will take their mask off just prior to their photo being taken

7. Staff will be sanitizing the waiting area regularly for everyone's safety

Thank you for your cooperation!

We will be hosting a Spirit Week for the whole school from October 26th - 30th. Our goal is to have fun as a community and enjoy dressing up - it's an opportunity for us to celebrate together in a way that feels good to everyone.

Spirit Day themes are listed in the photo below - more information to come about activities that will be available for students to participate in throughout the week. We will have some cool fall-themed contests and awesome prizes planned by your Eagle Student Leaders.

Friday, October 30th, is Eagles' Choice! There will be a whole school drive-thru pickup where we want to see you dressed up however you'd like to! We will have treats for kids that come and show us their spirit - either wearing a costume or their distance learning t-shirt. Even if you just show up with a huge smile, that's all the spirit we need.

PUMPKIN PATCH for Kindergarten - 2nd grade

The pumpkin patch field trip is a traditional first field trip for our kindergarteners, and we didn't want them to miss out on this exciting experience - so we are brining the pumpkin patch to them!

We will set up the pumpkin patch so that students can safely wander amongst the pumpkins, sit on hay bales, and (weather permitting) play some games and listen to a story. Each cohort will visit the pumpkin patch separately for safety. The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, October 27: Mrs. Estes's 1st graders and Ms. Lavagetto Group B

Wednesday, October 28: Miss Sherry's 1st graders and Ms. Lavagetto Group A

Thursday, October 29: Kindergarten (3 groups, teachers will email families)

Please pray for sunshine but dress students appropriately for weather if the sun doesn't show up for us!

A big thanks to Fazio Farms for discounting our pumpkins, and to our community for the cans and bottles you donate that paid for this pumpkin extravaganza!

Parents' Club Corner

Here is the Parents' Club schedule of meetings for the rest of the school year. We will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 6-7pm via Zoom:

  • Future meeting dates and time
  • Parent’s Club annual fund raising commitment to the school
  • Family Fundraising survey results
  • Small Committee update
  • Rummage sale Saturday, November 7th

Zoom link will be sent separately to parent/guardians this afternoon.

Please contact Melanie Reyna at 503-467-1805 or via email at melanie.reyna@usbank.com with any questions.

Conferences moved!

Thanksgiving Week, November 23-27, there will be no school for students. Conferences will be held on November 23rd and 24th, and the 25th will be a teacher work day.

This means that we will have our regularly scheduled Limited In-Person Learning October 19-23.

Thank you for your flexibility!

We are so grateful for your generosity! With your donations we purchased a Distance Learning T-shirt for each student and staff member to wear on Fridays!

Brand new items ONLY. We have children's toys, crafts, grill sets, and so much more! Everything donated for our spring auction is taking up space in our library. Come and get some Christmas shopping done and help our school generate some much needed funds.

If you have other BRAND NEW items you'd like to donate, please contact Rosemarie El Youssef by calling the school at 503-253-9400.

Please check out the links below, or visit our website and click on the "COVID-19 Updates" tab at the top to read the latest news about school.

Some schools in Clackamas County were able to transition to in-person learning when they met the requirements for the metric. When the metric changed, they were granted an exception to stay open until they have a positive COVID case in their community.

This transition and exception did not and still does not apply in Multnomah County. We understand how frustrating this situation is for families, and are so grateful to you all. Please continue to pray for a change in our county's numbers that would allow us to bring our students back to school full time.

Daycare UPDATE: we are unable to run a daycare program at St. Therese at this time, but continue to work on this process.

School Office Hours - changes in procedure due to COVID-19 safety measures

The school office is open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m each day. We love it when families drop by, but when the school-year begins we will need to be more careful about how we meet with you.

Effective Monday, August 31st please call ahead if:

* You need to meet with a staff member (Rosemarie, Penny, teachers, etc.)

* You need to pick something up, or drop something off (materials, payment, etc.)

If you are in the parking lot, please just call us from your cell phone, if you can and we will accommodate you if we can safely do so. We will do our very best to meet your needs and appreciate your cooperation as we work to keep our students and staff safe.
