Farm To School News
This month in Farm to School we are learning how to use clues like color, and plant part (root, stem, leaf, fruit), to understand what food will give our bodies. We’re highlighting the color purple with red cabbage and purple radish slaw, and we’re drizzling an orange-honey dressing over top. Here’s how to make it:
February Farm to School: Color Slaw Recipe
Dressing: 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar, 2 tbsp Olive Oil, 1 tbsp Honey (or squeeze out the juice of a wedge of orange into your measuring up), 2 tsp Orange Zest, a pinch of both Salt and Cumin
Whisk together
Salad: Slice purple and green cabbage into small pieces (cutting across the head horizontally allows the cabbage to fall apart into little strips), add cabbage pieces to the bowl. Shred radish with a cheese grater or food processor. Add cabbage and radish. Pour dressing and toss.
Enjoy!
Music News
It’s that time of year again….concert time! This update will give you all the details you need to know for your child’s concert. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at efinlayson@sbschools.net or 652-7413.
K-2 Concert: April 7th
3-5 Concert: April 8th
Dress: Students are expected to dress “nicely”. I do not want to cause anyone financial hardship by demanding they wear specific clothes, but students should do their best to look nice. Students should avoid wearing lounge and athletic clothes like sweatpants and sweatshirts. Please contact me with any specific questions.
Time: Both concerts will start at 6:30. Kindergarten and 4th grade should meet Ms. Finlayson in the music room at 6:15. Students should wait with their families in the gym until that time. Students should leave their personal belongings with their families. It is impossible to really know how long the concerts will be, but I aim to keep them to an hour.
Recorders: Yes 4th and 5th grade families, there will be recorder music happening during the concert! Students should make sure that they bring their recorder and keep it in the case until it is time to play. If they need to borrow one, they need to come see me in the music room before 6:30. After that the doors will be locked.
If you have questions, please contact me. I’m looking forward to sharing your children’s awesome music with our community.
Social Emotional Learning
For February and March, our schoolwide theme is emotion management, using our Second Step curriculum. We will be reminding students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, to stop and name their feelings, and how to use the Calming – Down Steps:
· Stop – Use your signal
· Name your feeling
· Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills will help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others. The Second Step Emotion Management Unit focuses on calming down and teaches students how to manage strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You’ll be receiving home links that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down. We hope the home links will give you tools to use together when your child is upset.
