This Week's Lead Learner Highlights

The next several weeks promise to be full of wonderful happenings at KP. We ended November with a PTO meeting featuring our students demonstrating how they use technology in the classroom, which was wonderful. On the first day of December, our KP student leaders for Unified Theater provided an interactive peek into their roles and the upcoming production on December 17th & 18th. The second day of December was wild fun at the Barnes and Noble Book Fair. I want to thank all of you for your participation as volunteers and/or shoppers to support our school through this PTO fundraiser. For the rest of the month, we will have the opportunity to hear wonderful music and see a student- produced performance. I look forward to enjoying these events with you.

As you review this week's newsletter (I tried to keep it short), please take note of the many things our students are doing to show themselves as citizens outside of KP. Have a wonderful weekend.

Weather Precautions

It's hard to believe there's only three weeks left until the holiday break! As we are heading into the winter months, it's a good time to remember to take extra care in the mornings and afternoons dropping off/picking up kids from KP and neighborhoods. Snowbanks limit visibility and often constrict roads and walkways. Please remember to leave a little extra time to make sure that all of our students are safe.

In the event of an early closing, it is best for your child(ren) to have a safe and secure place to go. Review the plan you have put in place that identifies where your child needs to go if school closes early. Take the time to write this plan in your child's agenda for a quick and easy reference.

As it gets colder, our diesel buses will be idling more often in the bus loops. This is necessary to keep them running and is under strict guidelines with the transportation and busing company. If you are picking your child up from school during the winter months, we encourage you to limit vehicle idling on school property to help the environment.

The following students were awarded “Character Counts at KP” certificates. These students are honored for exhibiting one of our positive character traits: Respectful, Responsible or Citizenship. Chess Anyone?

Introducing: The King Philip Chess Program!

All students in grades 6 through 8 who are interested in learning to play chess are invited to participate in the introductory session, which will include a program orientation meeting for parents. Practice play and lessons from basic to beginning intermediate chess will be offered. Emphasis will be on developing basic skills and providing the opportunity for at least weekly practice play. The program will be a combination of group lessons and free play.

The program will hold an introductory session on December 15 at 6:00pm to determine students’ interest for a permanent school year-long program for 2015-2016. This would be a fee-based offering. Please complete the form here to indicate interest along with the best day and time.

Students in Action

Heifer's Disaster Rehabilitation Fund

Congratulations to 8th grade student Rose Kitz!

This past September, King Philip 8th grade student, Rose Kitz, was invited to participate in the Global Citizenship Festival in New York City. She represented Heifer International as their Youth Ambassador, chosen for her work on her Quest project last year which resulted in raising over $7,000 so far toward disaster relief in Nepal, including sending an ark full of 16 types of animals! She stood on stage alongside Queen Rania of Jordan and Salma Hayek-Pinault. What an amazing experience this has been for her.

Click here for a short video clip of the Youth Ambassadors.

Rose is continuing her fundraising efforts to reach her goal of $10,000 to help the people of Nepal through Heifer's Disaster Rehabilitation Fund. You will find Rose with a table set up at our upcoming school concerts for grades 6 & 7. Please consider a donation to this wonderful cause. 5th Annual PJ Day for the Kids - Friday, December 11th

7th graders Rylie, Cayden, and Sabria want KP to join the 5th Annual PJ Day for the Kids, to benefit the Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders at Connecticut Children's Hospital! On Friday, December 11th King Philip students will join other schools and business partners across the state by donning PJs in honor of our child cancer patients.

PJ Day was established by a 7 year old boy, thankful for the life saving cancer treatment his sister received at Connecticut Children's Hospital. Since 2011, the event has raised more than $20,000 for the Medical Center!

Water for Sudan Project

Dear family, friends, and community members,
We recently read A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, in which she writes about the life of one of Sudan’s lost boys, Salva Dut. After reading the non-fiction novel, we have developed a great concern for the water crisis affecting so many on the continent of Africa. The response to this book was overwhelmingly one of concern as well as questioning how we can help.
After several days of research, we uncovered startling statistics regarding the lack of access to clean water that so many people in developing countries face. In addition to researching statistical data to support that there is most definitely a water crisis, we also researched ways in which we, a middle school in West Hartford, Connecticut, could help those most affected. We have found that “1 in 9 people around the world don't have access to clean, safe drinking water”, and we would like to do something about it.
We would like to raise $3000 to co-sponsor the purchase of a drilling rig and the actual drilling of a well in a village in South Sudan.
Please consider helping us reach our goal by going to and donating or by sending in cash/check (made out to KPMS- Water Challenge).
Thank you for your support!
