Writer's Workshop - Writing Essays
Dear Parents,
Welcome to our winter smore!!! We are doing our smore about the essays that we are writing.
First, we have to come up with our thesis statement. A thesis statement is an opinion that we have about something. For example, ours are Christmas is a time to be joyful and tennis is the best sport. Next, we need to think of reasons. A good amount of reasons is three. These reasons will support our thesis statement. After that, it’s time for examples. You should have about three examples per reason in order to have a good, persuasive essay.
There are many different kinds of examples. One way is to use lists. For example, if you were writing about ice cream and that it is the best food, and one of your reasons is that there are lots of flavors, you could list some of the flavors. Another kind of example is to interview someone who has experienced something you want to talk about in your essay. But that person can also be you! You can even make up a scenario that might happen in real life, using the word imagine. For example, if you were writing about art, you could say, imagine it is raining outside, and you have nothing to do. Then you remember that you can do art!
Another thing that we are doing is putting ideas on post it notes in our writer’s notebook. We are sticking with a thesis statement to write about. We write down little important parts about our thesis statement, on the post it note so we are prepared for writing our persuasive essay.
Thanks for listening to our smore! We hope you enjoyed our 4News article!

Math: Fractions
This month in school we learned about fractions it was very fun!
We learned how to do equivalent fractions. Some fractions have something called equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal to the other fraction. Here is an example of an equivalent fraction: 5/10 is equal to ½, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 6/12, 7/14, 8/16, 9/18, 10/20, etc. That is an example of equivalent fractions. To find equivalent fractions, you have to multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number. Thank you for reading!
Math: Decimals
Hi I’m Dane and I’m Colin and welcome to our smore. We will tell you about what we learned in math class about decimals. Enjoy!
We learned that 0.1 would be one tenth. 0.1 is equal to 0.10 which is ten hundredths. Dane will tell you more about hundredths. We learned that 0.1 > 0.01. Ten tenths would be equal to one. Two tenths would be written 0.2 not 0.02 because 0.02 would be a hundredth. And you’d write three tenths 0.3 and so on.
We also learned about hundredths. Some things about hundredths are they are like 0.01, 0.02, and also 0.03 and so on. Hundredths have to have a zero, then a decimal point, and a zero, then a number. When you write them: 0.01 not 1.0 hundredths are smaller than any other decimal.
Social Studies: Government Projects
Dear 4th grade parents,
We did the government projects. Everyone did at least one government project some people did google slides other people did board games and others did songs or videos. Addie (me) did a google slides and we had 1 month to do it and everyone’s was AWESOME!!!!
Most of us made google slides. The google slides had to have at least one slide about each branch of government. We had some really cool slides. There was a slide for the closing each branch and introduction.
Some people in the class made board games. The games were really fun. In one game, we had to roll the dice to see how far you move. Then you move your game piece and pick a card. Some cards were “Get out of jail” cards and other cards had different questions about the three branches of government. To win the game, you have to move all the way to the top of the board. In another game, you had to put a magnet under the right branch of government. If you matched it right, you won a jellybean! The games were really good and I had a lot of fun playing them.
Thank you for reading!
Social Studies: Cultural Groups
We have been working on five cultural groups so far in social studies. We are studying the five cultural groups which are the Latinos, the European Americans, the Asian Americans, the Native Americans, and the African Americans.
First we are at the Latinos, they introduced the corn to America. Next we are at the European Americans- they have inventors who made the light bulb. Then we have the African Americans who brought the tradition of storytelling to America. Then we have the Asian Americans- they brought different types of food and cooking. Finally we have the Native Americans. They got here using a land bridge in the ice age and they contributed names of the rivers.
Science: Erosion
Hello Parents today i am going to tell you about science. In science we have been doing a topic on erosion. We made Stream Tables and watched how the water flowed down and eroded the materials. There were 3 different Stream Tables. We had to set them up as 20 cm away from the beginning. We used a ruler, cup, tape-measure, and a table for: erosion, flood, and slope.
The standard stream table had a small hole and water flowed slowly. It took a while but finally the water reached the edge of the material. It created a small landslide and slowly almost the entire basin. Finally it poured out of the hole at the end.
The flood stream table was different from the standard because more water poured out into the basin. It created a big landslide and flowed much quicker than the standard. It quickly filled the entire basin and flowed out the hole at the bottom
The slope is different than standard and flood because it had two wooden wedges at the far end of the stream table, lifting it up. The water traveled from the earth material quickly. The water went much faster because it is traveling down not just straight. It will always be quicker because it is going really quick down.
Fall Fair
Hello, grown-ups of 4N! This is your 4N news coming at ya. We are here to tell you a little bit about the fall fair.
First, we wanted to tell you why we had that delicious pizza party back in the beginning of December. Compliments of Harrison’s parents, we were the class who made the most Guess Agains. Therefore, our class won the pizza party. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Berman! The pizza party was so fun! We watched a part of this fun video series called “Liberty’s Kids”. It is both interesting and educational. Thank you Mrs. Nguyen!
Ok. Now our part about the actual Fall Fair. It was so fun! Thank you to the PTA for setting this thing up for us. Anyway, a few weeks before November 17, we made 2 scarecrows- (Philadelphia Icons was the theme) Rocky and Ben Franklin. 4N did a great job stuffing and decorating the scarecrows. Also, thank you to all the parents that came out to help us.
And we were special. We were the only 4th grade class who decided to do the scarecrow vote.
And now, for the final answer- we won second place! (Bob the Builder won 1st, but lets not think about that…) we won… um, bragging rights. (Yeah, second place didn’t get anything…) But all in all, we had an awesome time with the scarecrows! THANK YOU AND HAVE A GOOD NIGHT! (Wait, there’s still more.) Sorry! Next!
Also there was the Fall Fair. The scarecrows were at the Fall Fair! How you voted for the scarecrows was there was a bucket and you put your tickets in it and whoever had the most tickets won in second or third or first.
(Are we done now?)
Yes! Thank you and have a GOOD NIGHT!
Borough Hall Field Trip
Hello 4N parents,
A couple weeks ago we went on a walking field trip to Borough Hall. In downtown Haddonfield, we were accompanied by the entire fourth grade. When we got inside and upstairs, we went to the meeting room. There we met Commissioners Moscatelli, Kasko, and Rochford. After a little talk, we split into groups and went down to different rooms and areas.
The first room we went to was the commissioners meeting room and we had a mock trial and we all shared problems that we had within the town. Then we went to the second room, which was the tax room. There we talked about how much money the taxes cost and how much money they make off of it. Then we headed down to the police room. We saw tons of awesome stuff like an electrical fingerprint scanning device.
Overall the field trip was amazing and we hope we can do it again someday.
Student-Led Conferences
Hello Parents! Welcome to 4News with Harrison and Ben! We Have recently had our Student-Led-Conferences. 4N students share with their parents what they have been learning. When we were preparing we had to choose two subjects to share. One was chosen by our parents, and we chose the other one. We had to find evidence that we were good at the skills. We also had to share One thing we needed work on. Once we were done with this step, we made a google slides presentation and we put some goals in. We have to use our goals to help us in 4th grade. This has been 4News with Harrison and Ben.
