MEA students did VERY well on their projects for our 5th Annual Science Fair!
There was a huge variety of interesting topics students looked into, and we admire
the hard work they put in to getting the details right about what nature was doing.
There is still time for students to go to the 65th Annual Science & Engineering Fair in
Balboa Park March 12-17, 2019 if they got a first or a second place here.The deadline
for submitting a project for consideration to the Screeners this year is February 13th
They will either accept, return with suggestions, or decline the projects they review.
It is a great experience for the students to take their project in for a much larger number
of people to enjoy and learn from what they have found out. It is enriching In many
If you do want to go on with your project, you need to pick up 1 or more forms for your
parents to sign, along with your teachers signatures, that your project was appropriate and safe. They were more than that. They were flat out good.
You also need to get detailed directions from Mr. Negus by emailing him at email@example.com, to find out about the steps in order of what to do before you submit your easy-to-construct Power Point file about your project.

Academic League Competition

The MEA Academic League with Coach Cate will meet here in our auditorium this Thursday to compete with the Point Loma High School Academic League. Answering a series of questions for all core subjects, the contestants try to outwit and out-maneuver their opponents in a set of matches to reach the finals. Come out and support our team!

Lifetouch Photography will be coming to Mt. Everest Academy to take Senior Portraits. Seniors, you may choose what you'd like to wear; Lifetouch will supply Caps/Gowns and Tuxedos/Drapes, or you may wear your own clothes. Portrait packages will range from $24-$62. The portraits will be used in the yearbook. Please plan to be there!

Fitnessgram Testing for grades 5, 7, 9
Fitnessgram testing is scheduled for the following grades and times:
- GRADES 7 & 9: Tuesday, February 26 / 10:40-11:40 / Auditorium
- GRADES 5 & 9: Wednesday, February 27 / 9:20-10:20 / Cafeteria
The Fitnessgram is a state mandated exam, which public school students in grades five, seven, and nine are required to take. There are six parts to the exam, and students must pass five of the six parts to pass the overall fitness test. Students are encouraged to practice these exercises ahead of time.
For 9th graders, passing the Fitnessgram cannot be stressed enough. Students are required to take 2 years of PE to graduate high school. However, if you do not pass the Fitnessgram test, you are REQUIRED to take PE additional years.
Please remember to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes!
Elementary Parent Conferences
Week of March 4
Due to parent conferencing for Elementary Reporting Period 2, all TK-5 elementary study groups will be canceled the week of March 4th.
Please look for an email from your child’s teacher(s) to schedule your conference.
Elementary extracurricular Spanish and art classes will be canceled that week, as well.
Thank you for your flexibility so that we may review student progress with all families.

SaveAround Coupon Book Fundraiser
On sale until Tuesday, February 5
The ASB is hosting a fundraiser selling SaveAround coupon books and we'd love it if you could help us. The coupon books have a ton of great deals for the San Diego area that last all of 2019. Anyone at MEA can help by selling books or by buying one. The books cost $25 each and half of the money goes to MEA. If you sell five books you get one free. If you are interested in buying a book or helping us sell please see Mr. Nielsen in room 6. The end of the fundraiser is February 5th.

Elementary Spanish Enrichment
Everyone gave their bear a Spanish name and a city of origin, and then introduced it in front of the whole class. It was a fiesta de osos de peluche (a teddy bear party)!
Since Field Day is postponed to 2/12 there WILL be a class this Tuesday, 2/5.

Choosing Classes for 2019-20
From February 1-28, students in grades 5-11 will have the opportunity to plan their classes for the next school year.

Grades 5, 6, 7
Students will receive articulation sheets listing course options for next year during study groups the week of February 4. Parents should review course options with their student at home. Students must return the articulation sheet with a parent's signature to their supervising teacher. If there are any changes needed, please mark the change before returning. For questions, please contact the student's supervising teacher.
Grades 8, 9, 10, 11
All 8th -11th graders must make an appointment to meet with Mr. Zappala during the month of February. Please reserve a conference time at this link to discuss courses for next year, graduation and college entrance requirements, and community college courses. Parents are encouraged to attend along with their student. If parents cannot attend, they should review the course options with their student at home. Students need to return the articulation sheet with a parent's signature to Mr. Zappala. If there are any changes needed, please mark the change before returning. Executive Women International Scholarship Program (EWISP) 2019 student application is now available on-line. The EWI Scholarship Program offers college scholarships to top high school seniors who currently reside in San Diego County and plan to pursue a four-year degree in any business or professional field of study. The award of this scholarship is based upon the academic standards set forth in the application and financial need.
The San Diego Chapter of EWI will award one (1) scholarship of $5,000. The local Chapter winner then advances to the national competition. National awards range from $2,000 to $7,500. Risa S. performs with Mercantile Alley Band
Sunday, February 10 / 3:00 / Mission Trails Church
RISA S. (Grade 11) will perform at the Mission Trails Church (4880 Zion Avenue, San Diego, CA 92120) on Sunday, February 10 at 3:00 PM. Risa will sing and play accordion and percussion as a member of the Mercantile Alley Band. This group is directed by Yuko Maruyama (MEA parent). They are also joined by Miles Clowminzer (MEA alumni) on drums and vocals.

(K-6) Water Conservation Poster Contest
The City of San Diego’s Public Utilities Water Conservation Program is launching its 2019 Kids’ Poster Contest for 1st through 6th grade students. This year's theme is "Where can we catch the rain?......and What can we do with it?" The winners’ artwork will be displayed to the public and will be featured in the 2020 Water Conservation calendar.
Please turn in your posters to your supervising teacher. The deadline to submit entries for the contest is March 22, 2019. This is a great and fun way to learn how to conserve water through art!
8th grader, Stanley S.
"Is Newer Always Better?"
Stanley ran a large amount of programs through different iterations of the Linux Operating System to see if the programs ran slower as he tested them on newer iterations of the Linux Operating System. He also analyzed trends and patterns that emerged from the graphical data he obtained from running these programs through all the operating systems.
(This is sort of like the Microsoft Operating System with different iterations you might remember using on your computer over the years: Windows '95, Windows '98, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 9, and Windows 10. Stanley used a famous operating system from an organization/company called Linux that doesn't charge money for their operating systems)
