On your mark, get set . . . .READ
That's the theme for the Summer Reading program this year. It's a sporty tie-in to the upcoming Olympics. (Although news from Brazil makes me wonder if they will really pull it off.) The annual themes come to us from the American Library Association and it is up to each library to decide how to use them. We at the Greenwich Free Library have chosen to focus less specifically on sports and more on staying active in general. While you might not tend to think of reading as part of an active lifestyle, it really can be. As a horse-crazy tween, I read every horse book I could get my hands on when I wasn't hanging around the barn doing chores. Whenever I plan a trip to a new place, I read fiction and nonfiction books from that place to help me in the mood and get more out of the journey. Trail and paddle guides and field guides for plants and animals are an important part of our outdoor experiences. Books can help you find your next adventure and enjoy it more when you get there.
We encourage kids to read in the summer so they don't fall victim to "the summer slide" - the loss of reading skills due to lack of use. But we adults are at least as susceptible to intellectual decline and more so as we age. It's important for all of us to stay physically and mentally active; trying new things, thinking new thoughts and having new kinds of fun. This month, we at the Library are bringing you lots of opportunities to do just that, whatever your age. We hope to see a lot of you this summer.
