EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of January 22, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
Welcome back to another week! It is great to be back at the beginning of a new week, especially after all of the cyber school days due to weather. I am excited to fully get back on schedule as I'm sure all of you are! We celebrated our 100th day of school today and it was so fun to see all of the creativity with our students and teachers. In honor of this special day, elementary students and teachers dressed up as a "100 year old person"! They also did some fun 100 day themed activities. You can see pictures from some of our elementary classes below.
THANK YOU!
We had a Teacher Luncheon provided by the 4th Grade parents today. I, along with the entire staff, would like to thank all of the parents that volunteered their time both to prepare and bring in food, as well as stay throughout the luncheon to help clean up. I believe that we have the best parents around and all of your hard work and volunteering never goes unnoticed or unappreciated!
FSA ACADEMIC TEAMS CONTINUE TO EXCEL
I want to congratulate 3 of our Academic Teams on their results from competitions this weekend. Our Future City Team on their 2nd place win over the weekend at the State Level! They also won 3 other Awards on top of their 2nd place victory. Also, FSA hosted the Georgia Independent & Home School Regional Technology Competition with our Tech Fair team and our students won 12 first places. Our math team continues to excel in many different competitions. You can see all of the results from the competitions below!
HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION SESSION
Before providing the details of this event, I would like to share two fun facts about our high school students with you.
1- Did you know that our high school students have a higher nationally norm test average than our highly successful elementary and middle school students? Yes, that is true. They have also received more Principal's Honor Roll certificates than any other grade level at our school this semester. We are very proud of them.
2- Did you know that our high school program has the highest enrollment growth from last year to this year. Yes, we are very happy with the fact that we have observed almost 100% growth in our enrollments at the high school section from last year to this year.
We are hosting two high school information nights to go over our course offerings for next school year and answer questions. Please see the dates and times here:
High School Presentation for 8th Grade Students & Parents
This Thursday, January 25 at 5PM in the media center.
High School Presentation for High School Students & Parents
Wednesday, January 31st at 5pm in the media center.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at this event.
RE-ENROLLMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Parents, Re-Enrollment is currently going on! Now that we have turned the calendar to a new year, for planning purposes, it is once again time to assess the number of students who plan to return to FSAPS next year. Please be informed that priority enrollment for current FSA students will end on Monday, February 5, 2018. After this date, any remaining spots will be offered to new applicants and wait lists will be administered. We have sent an email to all current families with the Re-Enrollment Form, or you can pick up a Re-Enrollment Form from the front desk. This form includes the tuition rates for the 2018 - 2019 School Year.
The Student and Parent Cyber Safety Presentations have a slight time change. Here are the updated times:
STUDENTS: Thursday, January 25
· 6th grade through 12th grade between 2:20 and 3:10 - At 3:10 students can go to their enrichment classes.
PARENTS: Thursday, February 1
· 5:00 – 6:00pm for parents
Parents, please be reminded that After - School Care is provided every day from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for a fee of $15.00 per day or $200.00 for the month. We ask that parents pick up any remaining students by 6:00 pm, and no later, as the school closes at 6:00pm. Sometimes our Academic Teams will stay later, but these students are not considered to be in After-Care. There are also sometimes outside organizations that use our facility for sports events, so it may look like there are still plenty of people here, but these more often than not, do not include aftercare students. Thank you for your understanding.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Students, please remember to keep track of your community service hours for this second semester. Your log sheet can be picked up at the front desk. The requirement is 10 hours per semester.
With Warmest Regards,
Kenan Sener,
Principal

An important message from the nurse about this cold and flu season
LET’S HELP PREVENT COLDS,THE FLU AND OTHER INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES FROM SPREADING THIS WINTER
As the school bell rings and we are headed back to class, the threat of colds, the flu and other infectious illnesses are a major concern, especially since there are confirming reports from the Department of Public Health (DPH) that flu activity is increasing statewide, along with the number of hospitalizations due to flu-related illness. Unfortunately, we had a few students out with the flu just before the snow break.
What can we do to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious illnesses? The first thing is simple...wash your hands frequently! Using hand sanitizer is also an option when soap and running water are not available. However, select a hand sanitizer that is alcohol based (and as with any soap, always supervise its use with small children). Research has shown that frequent hand washing and regular use of hand sanitizers in school settings can reduce absenteeism by as much as 20% (plus) in students and staff, and increased attendance by students and staff translates to improved academic performance!
Also, follow the school's standard procedure for routine cleaning and disinfecting. Flu viruses are relatively fragile, so standard cleaning and disinfecting practices are sufficient to remove or kill them.
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items like towels, combs, brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm or sleeve when coughing or sneezing instead of the hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day,and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you’ve had no fever for at least 24 hrs.
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
- Please allow students to watch topics on hand washing and the flu.

six flags read to succeed program is back
We are excited to share that the elementary students will participate in the Six Flags Read to Succeed Program again this school year.
If you are not familiar with this program, students need to read a minimum of 6 hours, log their time and get parent and teacher approval. Teachers then log student's time in their accounts and students are awarded a one day pass to Six Flags. Teachers that have at least 8 students participate, also get a ticket.
Students will bring home a parent letter and reading log.
The due date back to teachers is Feb. 23rd.

Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
