Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00 pm
as we present "abUSed: The Postville Raid," a documentary by Luis Argueta. Argueta's film is about the 2008 raid by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the AgriProcessors kosher slaughterhouse in Postville, Iowa, when 900 heavily-armed ICE agents arrested 389 people on suspicion of immigration violations. This film tells the story of these 389 people and their families - all of whom came to the US fleeing violence and starvation, seeking work, hope and a future for themselves and their children.
A facilitated discussion about immigration will follow the screening.
Presented as part of CSK's partnership in the HIAS Welcome Campaign, a nationwide effort of 380 synagogues to build understanding about the causes and effects of the worldwide refugee crisis and foster communities that welcome newcomers, regardless of their background or circumstances. While the Postville immigrants were not defined as refugees, their struggles mirror those of all people who flee unimaginable hardship in their places of origin, only to face extraordinary obstacles in their new homes.
