Huffines ELA 8

Mrs. Barnes

Week 5

Last week was a crazy and fun filled week! The students started their Block Lunch Clubs, we had a wonderful presentation by Mr. Hicks about anti-bullying, sponsored by PTA, and we ended last week with lots of spirit through our Pep Rally!

In our ELA class, students read a short story by Sonia Sanchez called "Norma". We practiced annotating, retelling, main idea, and finding text evidence to support our ideas. Next, we will continue our close reading strategies through our study of "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut. It is one of my favorite stories we look at this year and I hope the students will enjoy it as well!

Weekly Lessons: September 19-23

Please note, our agenda may change based on the needs of our classes.

Circle Talks: Student Led Discussion & Collaboration

After thoroughly reading our short story, "Norma", students were given an interpretive question. This question is meant to be challenging and thought provoking as it is an open ended question. Students find text evidence to support their thinking and then a whole-class discussion ensues. They have a mature conversation about the story and it's meaning. They did an excellent job for our first time!
