El Potrillo Above & Beyond Award Honors Two Couples for September
This month two awards were made and both were made to a couple. Ron Herrick and LaNita Heath worked 12-hour days during September to keep Central Elementary clean during the absence of an evening custodian. Steve and Patti Kreis spent many evening and weekend hours cleaning up junk piles and tree rows to get the high school campus looking good before football season. Congratulations and thanks to all of these award winners. Thank you to El Potrillo for sponsoring the Above & Beyond Award.
Also nominated this month for the award were Nick Amezola, Colton Bennett, Elsa Brooks, Gaye Callich, Kole Clarke, Deanna Granados, Shannon Hendricks, Norma Jaime, Amie Kreis, Gerard Paz Lostes, Ana Perez, Becky Rombeck, Trisha Stover, Annie Walters, and Lita Zimmerman.

Lyons Hosts Cross Country
It is no small event to host a cross country invitational. Coaches Dan Reazin and Bridget Starbuck prepared three courses winding in and around the LHS/LMS campus in preparation for the home event. Each race began on the football field and ended with a lap around the track. Figuring out how to lay out courses of one mile, two miles, and five kilometers through the school campus, and measuring, mowing, and marking the courses is an experience. With 11schools and 160 runners competing in eight races, the craziness factor is somewhere between herding cats and running a middle school track meet! Congratulations to the coaches and middle school and high school runners who had a very productive day, after an hour-and-a-half delay for lightning. 18 of the 35 Lyons runners medaled and won the combined team competition.
From Coach Dan Reazin: Varsity girls were 3rd and varsity boys were 1st. Individually, in the boys' varsity race, Cain Villaseñor took 3rd, Paco Espinoza took 7th, and Ant Ventura was 12th. In the girls' varsity race, Jojo Vargas earned 4th, Alli Solis got 7th and Marianna Boese was 8th. There were four medalists in the boys' junior varsity race, Ricardo Tapia - 3rd, Edgard Zuniga - 6th, Isaac Fall - 9th, and Jose Recendiz - 10th. For the JV girls', Havannah Vise came in 2nd and Tatum Tipp finished in 6th. In the 8th grade boys', Derek Valeria placed 10th. In the 8th grade girls', Sarah Loughridge took 7th and Mia Pulley was 8th. In the 7th grade girls' competition, Ava Almanza finished in the 9th spot. For the 7th grade boys' run, Aaron Villaseñor ran 2nd and Adahir Rivera 4th.

Middle School Football Update
From Coach Kole Clarke: The Lyons Middle School football team has seen some success this year with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. The Lyons have earned their victories over Hesston, Hoisington and Hillsboro and accumulated two losses on the season coming from Pratt and Smoky Valley. The players have been working hard and getting better each game.
The season has two weeks left featuring games against Haven and Larned. Lyons hopes to end the year with a winning season bringing hope, spirit and more student athletes to the Lyons football program.
LMS Volleyball Update
From Coach Sarah Smith: The 8th grade team continues to battle and is 3-3. Our girls had AMAZING attendance this summer and it shows! We are facing some tough competition and lots of "club ball" players. LMS gave Hoisington their first loss of the season as well as beating Liberty in 2 sets. We are set to face Hillsboro today and I am expecting another hard fought game! This group of girls will be a force to be reckoned with once they get to high school. If they continue on their journey and stick together, they could really make some noise.
7th grade is continuing to improve. Each game they are working together and are starting to figure it out. With only 7 girls, they are working hard and getting a lot of playing time! Hopefully, we will have a better turnout for summer conditioning so they can further their skills!
C-team is working on coming together as a team. We have had some struggles, but are going through the fundamentals to get them a good base. They did a GREAT job at their Ellinwood Tournament. As a team, they are starting to get their floor hits and have shown a lot of growth in their offense.
LHS Students Play With K-State Marching Band
Several former Lyons High School students currently play in the K-State Marching Band, and a couple of those are section leaders. However a couple of current LHS students were selected to play in the K-State All-Star Marching Band during halftime at the UCF versus K-State football game on September 23. Congratulations to Marianna Boese and Mia Bryant!

Just a Day in the Life of a Pre-schooler
Preschool students are busy learning the days of the week, months of the year, numbers, letters, colors, shapes, and most importantly, how to be nice, listen, share, and be respectful. Thanks goes out to our three PK teachers, Beth Nusser, Leanne Hollinger, and Natalie Henning!
4-Square Still Popular on Central Elementary Playground
The playground game 4-Square has been around since the 1950s. It started as a game called sidewalk squares since the sidewalk squares could be used for the player boxes without the need to paint or chalk. The game is alive and well at Central Elementary School where it is still a popular recess activity.
CPRA Rodeo Queens Visit Park and Central
The Central Plains Rodeo Association Finals was held this weekend in Lyons at the Bar-K-Bar Arena. Park Elementary and Central Elementary students and staff were privileged to have the CPRA rodeo queens pay a visit Friday morning! Lyons students learned about rodeo events, queen competitions, and they got to play some rodeo-related games.
