Hansen Weekly Update
March 17, 2023
Hi Hansen Students, Parents, and Families!
Nothing like a nor'easter the week before Spring officially starts! I hope everyone is staying well, and that you and your families have had a great week. It's a busy and exciting stretch of the school year, and in addition to the everyday teaching and learning that is taking place in our classrooms our students are participating in some fun enrichment opportunities. This afternoon, we had dancers from the Harney Academy of Irish Dance perform for our students and staff. Next week, we are excited for students to participate in 'Tales From African Traditions' on Tuesday....lots of great learning and fun!
Please enjoy some of this week's highlights below...
Creating a Culture of Equity, Achievement, Inspiration, and Joy!
Reminder - World Down Syndrome Day is March 21!
The Hansen is proud to support and celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, which is March 21, 2023. Please take a moment to review this flyer for more information, and we look forward to students and staff participating in Rock Your Socks!
The Book Fair is Next Week!
Students will have an opportunity to shop during their Library/Tech. blocks during the day, and there is also an opportunity for parents/guardians and students to visit after school on Tuesday, March 21st between 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me (brauningerd@cantonma.org) if you require any financial assistance. We are happy to support you.
5th Grade Flashback!
We invite families of 5th grade students to attend a matinee performance on Wednesday, March 22 at 4:15 p.m., and there is also an evening performance on Thursday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. On Friday, there will be an in-school performance for students and staff as well. Good luck to all of our 5th grade performers, presenters, and helpers. You will rock!
A Note From Humanities Coordinator, Mrs. Abrams
Hi CPS families,
My last update discussed how we are noticing a trend in a lack of vocabulary knowledge in our elementary students.
One of the best ways to improve a child’s vocabulary is to engage them in rich conversation. This is hard to do sometimes in our busy, modern lives. We are competing with screens, friends, busy schedules, and more.
One tip I have is to consider including KidNuz in your week. KidNuz.org is a non profit organization that puts out a quick daily dose of current events. Their mission is to “engage kids in current events, encourage critical thinking, and spark meaningful conversations.”
It is under seven minutes, engaging, and interesting for adults too. We use this site at school sometimes and it’s pretty popular! I often learn new things while listening.
If you try this in your home, you can lift vocabulary development by asking your children afterwards or on the way to school or activities if they know what certain words or concepts mean.
Have a great weekend,
Jackie Abrams

On Thursday, March 30 conferences will be scheduled between 5:30 - 8:00 p.m., and on Friday, March 31 they are scheduled from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. We look forward to connecting!
