Attendance Counts
Children can only thrive in school if they are present in school. Listed below are our definitions of and policies pertaining to attendance.
Absence—any day that a student misses school.
Late arrivals - After 9:30am the student will be marked absent for the morning.
Early Dismissal - before 2:30pm in the afternoon the student will be marked absent for the PM.
Excused Absence—Any medically documented absence, funeral days, or court will not be counted against the student.
Excessive Absences:
If a child accumulates 10 absences in a school year, the building administrator will send a letter to inform the parent/guardian
If the child reaches 15 absences in a school year the building administrator will inform the local police department of a potential truancy issue.
The police department will then contact or visit the child’s home to discuss the truancy with the parents.
If the absences reach 20 in a school year, according to law, referrals must be made to the Local Police Department and possibly, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
*Parents are encouraged not to take their children out of school for vacations. Vacation days are considered unexcused.
TARDIES—arrives late or leaves early from school and missing LESS than 55 minutes of school time

Boots are encouraged for rainy and snowy days, but shoes must be brought to school for classroom use. Shoes with wheels inserted in them should not be worn to school. No Flip Flops.
Birthday Celebrations
Recognizing your child’s birthday is important to us and we understand the importance of celebrating their special day with their classmates. However, sending in a food treat to the classroom can exclude those children who have food allergies or other dietary restrictions. For this reason, and in efforts to promote healthy lifestyles for our students, we respectfully ask that cupcakes and other food items NOT be brought into the classroom as a way of celebrating students’ birthdays. Think about a book to donate to the classroom, a board game or sports balls or equipment for the kids to use during outdoor recess. Please consult with your child’s teacher before your child’s birthday for good suggestions on what you could bring to celebrate.
Thank you for understanding!

Closegap
Welcome back Erving Skyhawks!
We will once again be using Closegap as an opportunity for students to do a daily emotional check-in. Closegap is safe and secure way of teaching children to be aware and understand emotions. It assists students with learning to identify their emotions and offers coping strategies, as well providing extra support throughout the school day. Please watch for an emails from Mrs. Gillis, our school social worker regarding opting your child out of participation in Closegap should you decide you do not want them to participate in the daily emotional check-ins.
