In-Person Learners
Updates for In-Person Learners
It was so great to see our Cougars back in the classrooms last week! I was extremely impressed to see so many students, even our youngest ones, keeping masks on and maintaining social distancing. Please keep practicing and talking about the importance of this with your child, especially with pre-k students. We have been establishing these expectations with students this week and are reteaching as necessary. If students are unable to follow these expectations, they will need to become remote learners until they are able to do so.
Here are some important updates to be aware of this week:
Health Screening Forms
- Your child's full name at the top
- The current date at the top
- Responses marked for all 4 questions. If the answer to any of the questions is "YES," you SHOULD NOT send your child to school. An answer of 'yes' indicates a failed health screening and these students will not be allowed to remain in the building.
- Parent/guardian signature at the bottom
Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring that your child arrives with a completed and accurate screening form on a daily basis.

1/2 Day of School on Friday, 9/4
Friday is a ½ day and it will be a remote learning day for all students. Your children will be bringing home a packet of work to complete on Friday. This packet is should be completed and returned on Tuesday. There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 7th due to the Labor Day holiday.
Car Rider Lanes
1) Please DO NOT exit your vehicle until after your car has passed the solid white line. By exiting your vehicle before this point, your vehicle may cause a backup down Bill Dunnett Parkway. Other parents must wait longer for you to walk back to your car after dropping off/picking up. Please be considerate of others and follow this policy.
2) Because students arrive and dismiss at certain doors based on grade level, we would like to begin designating specific lanes for each grade level. If your child is in Pre-K or Kindergarten, please enter into the far right lane for arrival and dismissal. If your child is in 1st grade, please pull into the middle lane. By pulling into separate lanes, we can allow parents of first grade students to move ahead and pull closer to door 6 and reduce traffic down Bill Dunnett Parkway.
3) The lane furthest to the left will allow for cars to pull away and exit. Be cautious when pulling around other cars and exiting. Many people will be walking back and forth to their cars, so please reduce speed and travel with caution.
Breakfast and Lunch Ordering
Also, if your child orders breakfast, it is brought home that same day for consumption the next morning. Please make sure it does not remain in your child’s backpack and brought back to school the next day. It is especially important that you remove the milk from your child's backpack right away when they get home so that it does not spoil in their backpack.
Please speak to your children if you do not want them ordering breakfast at school. If he/she requests it, you will be charged for the meal. If you can’t rely on your child, let your child’s teacher know if you never want your child to order breakfast.

Live Stream Expectations for Remote Learners
Thank you for your patience as we worked to get families logged on and connected with our Google Classrooms and live sessions. Please remember that your child is expected to abide by the procedures outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook and these virtual expectations. Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will be subject to the District’s discipline policies.
A few reminders:
Technology:
- Your child’s device should be fully charged and connected to the internet prior to the synchronous learning session.
- If possible, limit any streaming from other devices in the home during your child’s session as this decreases the speed of connectivity.
Schedule/Environment:
- Please log in on time to keep the schedule running smoothly.
- Set your child up in a quiet, well-lit setting that is free from distractions or background noise, as this is distracting to both the teacher and the other children.
- As much as we love seeing our students’ siblings, if possible, please keep them in another location in the house during your child’s synchronous learning time so that your child can concentrate.
Student participation/behavior:
- If the teacher mutes your child, please do not unmute. Instead, have your child raise their hand if there is something they would like to say. This expectation is consistent with students attending in person. Students must wait until called upon to speak so that they are not interrupting the instruction.
- Your child is expected to be engaged throughout the session. If they need a break, they can raise their hand and ask for a break.
Parent participation:
- Be there with your child throughout the session in case your child needs help. Your child's teacher may ask your child to engage in independent practice for a portion of the session while addressing questions from in-person learners. Your child may seek your assistance during these times.
- Please do not address the teacher with questions or comments during the session. You may send an email separately or write in the chat window.
- The teacher may ask a question that may be difficult for your child. Do not give them the answer. The teacher will provide cues or ask you to help when needed. It is important that we teach the students to persevere through challenging tasks.
- If your child does not remain seated, do not follow them around with the computer. Please mute the device and then go to encourage the child back to their seat.
Thank you for your support in helping us build an environment conducive to learning and a strong home-school partnership!
TEAM Day on Wednesday, 9/2
This Wednesday, September 2nd is our first TEAM Day of the school year. This means that there is an early dismissal for our in-person learners. Your synchronous time with your child’s teacher MAY be different than other days due to the early dismissal. Your child's teacher will contact you to notify you of if there is a time change for your live session.
1/2 Day on Friday, 9/4
Library Books
This week, we are going to introduce library book check-out for our remote first-grade students. Please see below for the procedures:
Pick up
Library books will be available for pick-up from Sorrick School Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays outside of Door #11 in a bin marked “PICK UP”.
Your child’s name will be on a post-it on his or her book. We will email you and/or your child when the book is ready. The books will outside of Door #11 in the “PICK UP” bin. Please allow at least 3 days from the time the book was requested until pick up.
Students will be able to put up to 5 books on hold but will only check one book out at a time. If all 5 of their choices are unavailable, I will select one that is similar to your child’s selected choices.
Only 1st grade will check out at this time. We will gradually start to add Kindergarten and Pre-K later in the year.
Return
Books can be returned any time to Door #11 in the bin marked “DROP OFF” located at Door #11.
