Message from Principal Lee
In elementary school, our role as disseminators of information has shifted to being facilitators of learning. I believe that elementary school should be a place of highly engaged learners. In order to achieve high engagement, it is important to tap into and broaden students’ interests, spark their curiosity about the world around them, and help them to make connections to that world and the people in it. Everything we do in school should be to facilitate that learning and make it as enjoyable as possible so that when students go on to middle and high school, they continue to love learning.
As educators, these days, we are learning how to shape our instructional practices to meet the needs of every learner in our classroom. Sometimes that means having to work on explicitly teaching students how to communicate with their peers and adults, identifying feelings, and resolving conflicts. While not part of the formal curriculum, these are vitally important lessons in nurturing our students so they can become successful in all areas of life. This does not mean that we can avoid all conflicts our students face by creating a perfect environment. If we were able to provide a totally conflict-free environment the experience of making good decisions, negotiating, managing feelings, forgiving and taking responsibility for one’s own actions will not be developed. On the other hand, we do strongly believe in preventing conflict by having students work to resolve a small issue before it becomes a much bigger one.
I bring these to your attention to let you know that being an educator at school is very complex. We do our very best every day to ensure that every child has a wonderful experience. We develop so many other aspects of a child than just the knowledge that they gain from books. I want to thank you for your partnership in helping to make Kolb a truly great place for all kids, including the ones who may have challenges. We love each and every child who attends Kolb and that is what makes our teachers and staff so special. I hope you will join me in celebrating our wonderful Kolb staff next week during Staff Appreciation Week, and just let your child’s teacher know how important they are in your child’s life.
