Gearing Up for a New Year
This year, Flagler Schools is Elevating Excellence. As we get ready to welcome our teachers, staff, and students back to our campuses, I want to take a few minutes to explain the theme to the 2022-23 school year.
So much focus is placed on school grades, and rightly so. It's only natural to want to know how we are doing. Whether it's on a personal level, as a school, department, or organization, we like to see how we compare to others. The most recent state grade gives Flagler Schools a "B" as a district. This is the last grade we will receive under the old system.
I have challenged our school and district leaders to focus on "excellence." If we promote excellence in our efforts to support academic growth, all our students will excel. We need to spend this year elevating excellence, embracing excellence, and expecting excellence.
With that being said, let's take a look at a few things before classes resume Wednesday, August 10th.

Back to School Immunizations
Families can schedule their student immunizations from now until August 12. Appointments are available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am - 10:30 am and then 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
It's important to note, that this is a 2-step process requiring families to have all up-to-date documents with them before they arrive. If staff must ask for additional documentation from medical providers, extra time may be needed.
Florida Department of Health-Flagler says you will need:
- Up-to-date immunization records for all children needing services
- A state-issued photo ID for parents/guardians
- Insurance or Medicaid Card (if applicable)
Once the documents have been collected, you'll get a phone call within a day or two to schedule an appointment to come back for the needed vaccinations.
These vaccinations are offered free of charge through the federally funded Vaccines for Children program. The health department will also ask parents and guardians if their children would want to take part in in-school influenza vaccinations in the fall and Tdap shots for sixth-graders in the spring. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the American Association of Pediatrics recommend adolescents receive Meningococcal and HPV vaccinations, which are also available at the health department.

Staggered Start for Kindergarteners
I want to pass along important information to families with kindergarteners. While the first day of school is Wednesday, August 10th, our elementary schools will once again hold a staggered start for our kindergarten students. What this means is: if the student's last name begins with A - L, they will start school on August 10th and then stay home the 11th. If the student's last name begins with M - Z, their first day of school will be August 11th, so they'll stay home the 10th. ALL students will then be in class Friday, August 12th.
This process helps the children become comfortable in their new surroundings and become familiar with the daily routines and procedures. If a student rides the bus or is registered for extended-day programs, they will be able to utilize these programs on the days they are on campus.
Start and End Times
Instruction begins at all our elementary schools will begin at 9:10 am and end at 3:40 pm.
Our two middle schools will begin instruction at 7:30 am and end at 1:40 pm.
Our two high schools begin instruction at 8:10 am and end at 2:40 pm.
This means students need to be on campus, in their classroom, and ready to learn at those times.
As a reminder, 6th grade has returned to our middle schools and is no longer in our elementary schools.
Pink on Parade 5k
In past years, our schools have formed teams and I encourage our teachers, administrators, and staff to do this once again. If students (18 and under) register for the event before October 1st, their registration fee is cut in half, as long as they use the code "FlaglerParent."
In addition to the 5K, there will be a 1-mile pet-friendly Fun Walk, so the entire family can take part!
I hope to see Flagler Schools well-represented during this important event. All money raised stays right here in Flagler County, helping our family, friends, and neighbors battling breast cancer.
