Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 9/12/22

Big picture

Congratulations Section/Students of the Week!

We are going to start recognizing the some of our outstanding students moving forward. We will be selecting a Section of the Week and two Students of the Week and will recognize them in our weekly newsletter and on our social media pages.

This week we are recognizing the Wind Symphony Flute section - they have worked incredibly hard over the past month and are improving at a rapid pace. We are super proud of the dedication they are showing and the example they are setting for others!

We are also recognizing David Williams (beginner tuba) and Lynlee Jones (beginner oboe). David has shown great leadership in class, has gone out of his way to help other students. has been generously sharing his book with others who don't have one yet, and has just been a joy to teach. Lynlee has shown up to practice before school regularly this week and is taking our notes and really implementing them in her practice. She is improving so quickly, has a super positive attitude, and is a rock star already!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE WONDERFUL STUDENTS!!!

Band Fees Due Sept. 16

If you have not taken care of your fall semester band fee or your first payment if you are splitting the fee over 6 months, that payment is due by September 16th. We are already spending band fees on festival registrations, t-shirts, and more and truly appreciate you making that first payment. If you are having financial difficulties, please reach out to us so we can help you!

Band t-shirts will be delivered next week and we will be unable to give any student a shirt who has not submitted their first band fee payment of a minimum of $10.

REMINDER - Advanced Band Supply List

If you missed our Advanced Band supply list at the end of last year, you can see the needed items at this link. We will be using the Foundations for Superior Performance book in all advanced band classes this year. The flip folder will also be needed before the first performance (September 19th for ALL Advanced Band students). Many of the items listed can be purchased at any of our recommended music stores, and possibly even cheaper there. We made the supply list with links to Amazon for ease, but feel free to purchase the supplies wherever you would like!

DATE CHANGE - Advanced Bands Football Game Performance

Monday, Sep. 19th, 5:15-8pm

3901 Miles Road

Sachse, TX

The whole football schedule has been redone and we will now be attending the games on 9/19 and 10/24, both at Sachse HS. The detailed itinerary for the game on September 19 can be found here. **Please note that percussion and tuba students will be picked up from Hudson and ALL OTHER STUDENTS WILL BE PICKED UP FROM THE BACK OF SACHSE HS AT THE STADIUM.**

LINK WORKING NOW! - Gathering Interest for Dallas Winds Concert

The Dallas Winds is one of the premiere Wind Ensembles in the world. On October 18, they are performing the world premiere of a new clarinet piece by John Mackey with one of the world's current most famous clarinet players, Julian Bliss. We would love to take our clarinet players to see this incredible concert and want to see what the interest level would be. Tickets have not gone on sale yet, but with group pricing would probably cost between $15-25. Please fill out this form if your clarinet player is interested in attending.

Pink Out FB Game - October 24

The Advanced Bands will be performing at the 7th and 8th grade football games on October 24th at Sachse High School. This will be the Pink Out game for breast cancer awareness month and the cheerleaders are selling t-shirts specifically for this game. You can find the link to order a Pink Out shirt here. The deadline to order the shirts is September 19th. Band students will be allowed to wear this shirt in lieu of their band t-shirt for this game.

Orders Closing SOON!

We will be taking orders for yard signs and car decals from now until September 30th. We will put the charge for the orders in each student's Charms account after receiving the order form. You have until October 21st to complete the payment for the orders. Any orders that have not been paid for by October 21st will be cancelled. Expected delivery of the car decals and yard signs is early November.

A Quick Note About Grades

As the year progresses, we have students who miss grade deadlines fairly regularly. The due dates for our assignments are listed in Canvas when we post the assignments. Occasionally those due dates change, but we try to keep the students updated when that happens. Please know that we grade assignments as quickly as possible, but if students turn things in late, we will not be able to jump in and change the grade. We do update our gradebook once a week (usually on the weekends), and will make sure to update grades for late work at that time. If your student wants to make sure their grade doesn't take a dip, please encourage them to submit all assignments on time. Thanks for your understanding!

Repeat Information From Beginning of Year

Switching to BAND app over Remind

Because our band has grown so big, we can no longer use Remind. We have reached the maximum participants in multiple classes and do not have space for more unless we upgrade our account (which costs more than we wish to spend). We will be switching messaging services to the BAND app (which the Sachse HS band also uses) to align our cluster. Please sign up for the appropriate class(es) for your student. We will NO LONGER be using Remind, so if you were just signed up for band, you will not need that app/number any longer. Thanks for understanding!

Honors Band and Wind Symphony Sectionals

Honors Band and Wind Symphony students will begin sectionals THIS WEEK (August 22). Sectionals are an extra small group rehearsal that takes place outside of the school day. These sectionals are required and grades will be given for playing tests and pass-offs done during the sectional time. Please make every effort to schedule extra activities and appointments around this sectional schedule.

Band Fees

Because our school band budget is so small, we have to charge a band fee so that we can provide the best music education experience for all our band students. This band fee covers all instructional materials (band binder and all its contents), band shirt, contest entry fees, solo accompanist fees, performance music, music theory subscription, transportation, meals before performances, incentive days, and so much more. We set up our band fees to be collected up front (or split into payments), so that we are not constantly asking for $5 here, $7 there, etc.

This year, you can pay band fees through cash or check (made out to Hudson Band Boosters), Paypal through Charms (watch this video to walk you through the Charms system), and for the first time - credit card through the band website. Visit the band website and enter the password HawkBD2223 to enter the secure page and pay online. Please consider adding the optional donation to your cart to cover the credit card fees we incur using this convenient service.

If you have a financial hardship, please communicate with us so we can help you. We never want a student to be unable to participate due to finances and will do everything we can to work with your family and ensure your student is included.

Private Lessons Filling Up

Our private teachers are THE BEST and their schedules are starting to fill up. If you are going to sign up for private lessons, DON'T WAIT - TURN IN THE ENROLLMENT FORM ASAP.

The single biggest investment you can make in your student's musical advancement is signing them up for private lessons. Return the private lesson enrollment form to get your student started ASAP. Lessons are $20 each week and the fee is paid directly to the instructor.
