Hello Mill Creek Community, and welcome to the unofficial start of summer...
Yes, the Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. Memorial Day Weekend is often considered unofficial start of the summer season (even though the actual summer season does not begin until June 21). Pools will be opened… grills will be fired up… and some will journey to the Jersey Shore to celebrate the weekend. All of that is tradition and should be enjoyed, but let us also not forget the true purpose of the Holiday. Without the many who fought for and to maintain the freedoms we have, including the freedom to engage in the many traditions of Memorial Day Weekend, much of what we love would not be available to us. And the significance of Memorial Day is greater, as it is focused on those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can continue to enjoy the many freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States.
Among the many lessons we work to convey to the students of Mill Creek is to have appreciation for acts of selflessness... acts that help others in need. We even encourage our students to engage in these types of acts, which probably best align with our Creekers' Code tenets of empathy and support. We also appreciate that our greater Community often engages in acts of selflessness to support Mill Creek, whether they involve reinforcing the learning that happens here at home, volunteering to help out at school event, or some other means of supporting our students.
Those who served and sacrificed certainly engaged in arguably the most significant level of selflessness. We can honor them in our acts that help others.
We do hope you enjoy the long weekend and whatever you plan to do to celebrate the unofficial start of summer. But we would also encourage you to take a little time reflect upon and remember those who sacrificed so we can enjoy so many of our cherished freedoms.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about Personal Electronic Devices...
Teachers have noticed an increase in the amount of electronic devices, especially smart watches, being brought to school by students. In some cases, student personal electronic devices are becoming obtrusive to instruction, especially if alerts are set to go off throughout the school day. Considering this, we would ask the following:
- Please consider having your child keep their personal electronic devices at home.
- If you feel your child must bring their personal electronic device to school, please have them put it on a setting that blocks alerts during the school day. For instance, the newer versions of Apple Smart Watches have a Schooltime feature that allows parents to limit the watch’s functionality during the school day (some older versions, however, do not have this feature).
- Another option is to have your child keep their personal electronic device silenced and in a secure part of their bookbag during the school day.
Additionally, we cannot ensure that a student’s personal electronic device will not go lost or missing when it is brought to school.
Thank you for your understanding regarding and attention to this matter.
