Design Thinking & a Tube Map
Dear Cougar Family,
TED launched a new web series "Small Thing Big Idea," which "celebrates the lasting genius of everyday objects so perfectly designed that they changed the world around them." This video (which I can only fine on Facebook--sorry for those without it) explains "The Genius of the London Tube Map." It caught my eye for two reasons--I like to know random facts, and you could label almost anything with "London" and this former British Lit teacher will read it or watch it.
However, I took away not only a new understanding of the tube map, but also thoughts on how design-thinking is important in our roles. As educators, we are constantly designing tasks and experiences to immerse students in learning. Sometimes we overcomplicate things, and like Beck did with the tube map, simplifying can make things more accessible, easier to understand, and help to transfer learning for long-term retrieval and application.
As you plan for the coming weeks, please keep in mind the three design principles highlighted in the video:
1) Focus
2) Simplicity
3) Thinking in a Cross-disciplinary Way.
As we emerge from our "Ice Day," I hope that each of you is well-rested and warm. As we greet our students tomorrow morning, please remember that not everyone has the simple luxuries of heat that works, pipes that do not freeze, and a pantry full of food, and our students may have been yearning for the routine of school--a hot breakfast and a warm smile from their teachers. Let us be ready to welcome them!
To help you feel better about braving the cold tomorrow morning, you are welcome to wear jeans with your warm Cougar spirit gear. Have a fabulous week!
As always, COUGAR PRIDE!
