4th Grade Newsletter
November 24th - December 5th
Integrated Core
We kicked off our civics and government unit by taking a trip to the Capitol. This trip was a great way to introduce our unit and give the kids a chance to see how our government works! Last week, fourth graders learned what it means to be a good citizen and how the three branches of government work together to make our world a better place. All fourth graders were also asked to create a family constitution at home explaining the goals and expectations of each family member in their home. We ended the week by reading the book "Duck for President" and the students started planning for their next project. Each group will be asked to create campaign posters and a speech for their candidate. The candidate can be any animal that they choose! After break, students will complete their campaign projects and present them to the class. Students will get a chance to vote on the best candidate in their classroom.
Today we are welcoming a guest speaker to fourth grade. Mrs. Kelly Kultala, who happens to be Mrs. Burson’s mom, will be speaking to the fourth graders about our government and the importance of voting. Mrs. Kultala has served many public offices over the years which include being a state senator, a city commissioner, and a school board member just to name a few! Mrs. Kultala will be asking the students to choose their favorite cookie, and campaign for it. Then she will show that on the voting day only a small portion of the population will actually vote, which can cause their favorite choice to not win. Be sure to ask your students today which “favorite cookie” won in their group voting today and how many votes actually counted.
For our ELA skill work, last week we finished our review of text structure. After break we will dive into main idea and summarizing.
