Glen Grove NWEA Testing Information

All Glen Grove students will take the reading MAP Assessment on Tuesday, February 2 and the math MAP Assessment on Thursday, February 4.

As noted before our fall assessments, NWEA is designed to measure our students’ growth in reading and math over time. Given the very unique schooling our students have experienced this year, we are more interested than ever in checking in on our students’ progress and revising instructional plans, as needed.

As always, we want to work together in encouraging our students to do their best work without causing them undo test-taking anxiety or stress in the process. During this important testing period, you can support your child by:

  • making sure your child is in school on the testing days of February 2 and 4th, unless, of course, there is a medical reason for an absence, AND

  • making sure your child is at school on time on those testing days.

For maintaining the highest standards of safety, these requests are especially important this year. If your child misses school or is late for the test, he/she will have to make up the test the following week in an alternate testing area with a different teacher. During COVID, we are trying to minimize the mixing of students with others outside of the children and adults in their homeroom and math classes. Additionally, children do prefer to take a test with their own teacher who is the person that they know best and with whom they are most comfortable.

Valentines Day 2021

Although our safety protocols prohibit us from planning the typical festivities we’ve enjoyed in the past, we DO want to create some Valentine’s Day fun for our students on Friday, February 12. Please note the following:

  • Students will not be allowed to exchange cards or candy this year, due to the strict safety protocols we are adhering to – protocols that have kept Glen Grove a safe environment this year.

  • Having said that, we know that our students get really excited about Valentine’s Day, so our teachers will are already planning for a few games and/or activities sure to bring some fun and laughter to their day.

Virtual Author Visit

On Wednesday, February 3rd at 3:15, District #34’s intermediate students and their families will have the opportunity to attend a virtual author visit with National Book Award nominated graphic novelist Colleen AF Venable and illustrator Stephanie Yue. They will be celebrating the release of their debut middle grade graphic novel "Katie the Catsitter".

The author and illustrator will discuss the writing and illustrating process, how they became an author and an illustrator, and explore some of the themes of the book: growing up, friendship, heroes, and animal rights.

The district will be providing the students a link for the Zoom Webinar closer to February 3rd. Students should look for an email from the LRC Director, Mrs. Funke. Interested families can purchase the graphic novel by visiting the Book Stall’s website for more information. The deadline to order a book is Friday, February 5th.

We Have Kicked Off the Kids Heart Challenge!

Kids Heart Challenge is under way and our students are doing a great job! Your student is learning how nutrition, mindfulness and being active can help us live longer, healthier lives, while giving students the opportunity to help others who are affected by cardiovascular disease. Please be sure to ask your child about what they are learning and what they can do to make a difference.

Students can register at www.heart.org/KHC or search, “Kids Heart Challenge” in your app store and take the challenge! If 300 students sign up, Mr. Roberts will get SLIMED on zoom!

Thanks again for being part of the Kids Heart Challenge, supporting our school and the American Heart Association. Together, we are making a difference.

Don't Forget to Self-Assess!

When your child comes to Glen Grove, the student self-assessment needs to be completed BEFORE YOUR STUDENT LEAVES FOR SCHOOL so that it shows up in our system by the time your child arrives.

Thank you in advance - this eliminates the need for your child to stand in line unnecessarily!

Log in to District 34's PowerSchool web portal to complete the self-certification tool.

Click on the SELF-ASSESSMENT link on the home page to submit your child’s temperature and answer questions about COVID-19 symptoms and exposure. Click submit. If you have multiple students in District 34 attending in-person on the same day, click on each student to fill out the self-assessment for them as well.

Please note that the question about non-essential travel outside of suburban Cook County has changed.

When students arrive at school, a staff member will scan their ipad barcode or bus pass barcode to confirm completion of the self-certification process.

Big picture
If it has not been completed, a staff member will conduct a temperature check and screening. If the screening indicates COVID-19 symptoms, the health office will immediately send the student to the infirmary and contact the parent or guardian to pick up the student.

Please be sure to send your child to school with their iPad, water bottle and mask.

Masks are required at all times when students are in our buildings. The District has provided cloth masks for every student and staff member; disposable masks will be available in our buildings for those who need them.

If your child rides the bus, they must wear their mask and remain in their assigned seat.

Thank you for helping to keep our school safe!

From the Nurse's Office

If you need any help or support during this difficult time of the pandemic, please do not hesitate to call Jennifer Hastings, RN, our Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394.

Health Office Information

Students requiring any medications during school hours must file an "Authorization & Permission for Administration of Medicine" form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found here, under the Health section on the Forms & Documents page on the district website. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, cough drops, etc.

All student absences should be called into the health office at (847) 657-2394! In addition, please call if you will be bringing your child in late or picking them up early. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.

Mandatory Health Forms for 2021-2022 Incoming 6th Graders

All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 18, 2021. Your child will NOT be able to start school until the physical form is turned in. If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child's middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394. Click here for the health exam form.
